So I'm going to try this....
I've tried vegetarianism. I was a vegetarian for around 2 years and loved it but I still ate crap. Then I went vegan for 3 months. Still ate some junk food but for the most part, I felt great. So much more energy, my face started to clear up, I lost 10lbs without even trying, and I didn't feel so sluggish. Then I was dumb and went back to eating vegetarian, and eventually back to eating an omni diet. I've tried vegetarian and vegan off and on during the past year but I really want to get healthy again. I'm 75lbs overweight. Now, during the times I was eating vegetarian or vegan, I tried getting my husband to try it since it was healthier than what he was eating. He sometimes went along with it and sometimes not.
Just today though I told him we needed to go grocery shopping and what he wanted to get. He told me he wants to try a raw diet (raw vegan) and I told him I'd switch too. So I guess wish me luck. :D

Re: So I'm going to try this....
In my opinion, there are very few redeeming qualities to veganism (or vegitarianism for that matter). The reason its healthier is because you are adhearing to a strict code of eating. Apply the same code to an omni-diet and you'll see the same results.
"You are what you eat" applies here. You eat healthy and balanced, vegan or no, and you'll be healthy. It truth, it takes more for vegans to balance thier diets then it does for someone who doesn't have those constraints.
Outlook is whats important to change, and if veganism provides that outlook, then great. It qute obviously isn't for me, but I still wish you the best.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
I couldnt live one day knowing that there will not be a big chunk of meat calling my name on my plate each night.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
Actually there are many redeeming qualities to a vegan and vegetarian diet but I'm not going to try and persuade you to change your diet. To each their own. I personally loved a vegetarian diet and felt AMAZING on a vegan diet. And on the days I went raw vegan (usually only a few days at a time) I felt great! I have even noticed changes recently. My sister has gone vegan for health reasons and I've been eating more vegan foods since we have more time to spend together (I go over to her house 1-2x a week and eat nothing but vegan food and I've been eating more vegan food at home.)
I plan on keeping a blog/journal for this, recording what I eat and how I feel. I am also going to use a food tracker to track what nutrients/how much of each nutrient I'm getting to make sure I don't become deficient in something.

I remember saying that oh so long ago(I was a steak and potatoes girl. Loved me some ribs!), and went vegetarian for 2 years. NEVER missed meat. I went back to eating meat because it was easier at family meals not to get hounded about my diet. Now I'm really ready to go back to vegetarianism, even vegan.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
I agree--Vegans invariably develop nutritional deficiencies and fall ill. It simply isn't natural. Humans are very adaptable animals, but over a long period of time, limits will be reached.
Eat HEALTHY, and you'll be healthy. That means eating lots of fresh vegetables, a bit of fruit, a bit of properly raised meat (grass-fed beef, fish, pastured chicken, etc), and maybe a bit of whole grain. Don't believe the government food pyramid (but you knew that already). Avoid JUNK FOOD. The problem isn't adding meat, eggs or milk to your diet--the problem is the JUNK FOOD--the grain fed meats, the processed garbage, white bread, excessive sugar, etc etc.
If you aren't able to control your craving for junk food, no raw vegetable diet in the world will save you.
You want to know what the key is?
Don't deprive yourself of the stuff. Actually permit yourself to have something junky that you crave at least once a day--in SMALL quantity. A little square of dark chocolate (healthy), a half scoop of ice cream, whatever. Psychologists will be quick to tell you that deprivation leads to even more intense cravings for those things. You can't just cut yourself off cold turkey and expect it to work. If you do, eventually you're going to snap and be back where you started.
So, set aside a day once a month where you eat like a redneck hog. Big bucket of fried chicken, tater tots, hot wings, soda, Ho Hos, whatever. You won't be able to eat much of it, because your stomach will have shrunk, but it'll taste great, and you'll be able to avoid it the rest of the time, because you know you've got another splurge day coming up. The one day of splurging on garbage food won't hurt your health or affect your weight much (if at all). It'll keep you sane and on track (which a diet of raw vegetables won't do...are you aware that even Homo erectus had fire? There is nothing in human evolution that supports large amounts of raw food as being natural for our species--we have been cooking throughout our evolution).
As for me personally--I find large amounts of vegetables to be difficult to digest, and I continue to feel hungry unless I have at least some meat in my diet each day. I don't feel at all well without it. Everyone's metabolism is a bit different, and no single diet is appropriate for every individual.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
Vegans can be and are healthy individuals. I'm not one, nor would I ever want to be, but I have family that have been vegan for years now and they live a productive life with very few ills. Possibly less than omnis. It is a strict lifestyle, and like others have said, if anyone followed their diet as strickly as Vegans, they would be just as happy.
I'm fine with it as long as they don't try to feed me soyburgers!

Re: So I'm going to try this....
:gj:My Fiance is Lacto Ovo (sp) which means she will eat egg product and cheese products. Many forms of vegatarianisim put there and I cant keep track. She has been one for over 16 years since she was 9.. I'm not a vegatarian, I LOVE BACON!!!!!! lol
I'm sure she would love to see that there are more vegatarians on here.. her S/N is Andre6313 drop her a line maybe she can help you out if ya need it.. she is also a gym rat and loves to work out and makes it hurt so good lol..and has the tummy to prove it :D
Thought I'd drop my 2 cents in on this since I am around it 24/7 and not all vegatarian food is bad.. Tofu is pretty good if made right. Enjoy your veggies
Cheers:gj:

JB, There are some amazing attributes to being a vegetarian! Esp a raw veggie! I say go for it, don't let ANYONE try an persuade you differently. Vegans wont inevitably fall ill... I have been a lacto-ovo for 16 years now,(but I don't eat much dairy or eggs, just some so I can't call myself a vegan) essentially a rawist for the past 2 years now, and LOVE IT!!! I haven't been sick in years, not even a cold. I do take in some whey isolate protein so I can not call myself a vegan, but I'm dang near it. My fience "Zeke" can vouch that I DON'T get sick, and that I am VERY healthy and HAPPY! Also, I am a gym rat... soooo, there are ways to live a healthy veggie lifestyle, and get all of your essential nutrients, if that is what you want. Hope this helped! Feel free to pm me me if you would like to chat. :D

Re: So I'm going to try this....
If done incorrectly, yes, vegans can develop deficiencies but of course so can omnivores if they eat a crappy diet. If you eat properly a vegan will not develop deficiencies. I really wish people did not have this view of vegans as being twiggy, nutrient deficient crazies. A vegan diet is actually one of the most natural diets a human can have (but I really really do not want to sit here and defend myself)
To those of you wishing me luck, thank you. That is what I needed. :D (not people coming on here telling me to eat meat) Today is Day 1. I am going to go to the store to grab lunch and enough fruit and veggies to last a day or two. One mistake I made the last time I tried going raw vegan was I bought way too much food and it went bad before I could use it so since the store is literally a short bike ride away, I'm going to do my shopping every 2-3 days instead of a weekly trip.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
Thanks andre6313! My sister went vegan a few weeks ago and we are both seeing major changes in her. She used to have horrible face acne and within the first week it began clearing up. She has lost 10lbs and I can tell you she looks amazing. She just looks so much healthier. And she can cook some yummy food! (We made a chocolate vegan cheesecake the other day Yum!)
I won't be 100% raw. Maybe 75% or something like that. I will indulge in some cooked food maybe a few times a week (cooked vegan food).

I highly disagree that "Vegans invariably develop nutritional deficiencies and fall ill" The only one who fall ill are the uninformed "bad" eaters... The mind set that that vegans are unhealthy is just that...a mind set, a stereotype. Yes, I do agree that depriving one's self of certain thing can turn to a binge session, but vegans aren't depriving themselves, they are making an informed lifestyle change... More power to them! Also, eating like a "red neck hog" as you say is also know as a binge... NOT a good idea!!!

Oh RIGHT ON!!! That's rad that you are already seein changes in her!! MMM...vegan cheesecake...*drool*
I'm not 100% raw either...some things just need to be cooked, lol.
I also go to the store daily, it is the only way to get and eat the freshest veggies possible... ;D If you need any thing girl let me know!

Other than the tater tots and soda (which can be vegan) that just sounds disgusting. Just thinking of that makes my stomach feel like a brick. Whenever I eat meat and dairy (or processed foods) I always feel so heavy and sluggish. That is even when I eat "healthy" omni. Why make myself feel like that when I don't have to. Your body may have adapted to eating an omnivorous diet, but mine hates it and I want to give my body what it needs.

Thank you so much for your support. :D And you have no idea how good that cheesecake was! Maybe I should go pay her a visit today and hope she hasn't eaten it all. I don't eat a lot of tofu (maybe once a week) but they now make a tofu that is chocolate just for this kind of recipe. Of course we didn't find it until after we had gotten all the ingredients for the recipe and we made it all from scratch (actually mixed sugar and cacao in with silken tofu to make our own chocolate tofu). And she even managed to make this vegan mac n cheese that actually might help me stay away from regular mac n cheese. (that was my downfall before. I craved cheese even though I'm lactose intolerant.)

See, I put some green stuff on my steak :cool::cool:
Hehe seriously, good job :) I'm sure it takes a lot of willpower and self control to constrict yourself to that type of lifestyle. I know I couldn't do it.
Where's the A1?

Re: So I'm going to try this....
I'm not going to think of it as restricting myself. I'm going to think of it as an excuse to go all out and try new kinds of fruits and veggies and not to mention, I totally have an excuse to eat my weight in mangos! :rolleye2: Okay, so not really but they are definitely going to be on my menu a few times a week. They are by far my favorite fruit. Mmm, and coconuts! And yummy green smoothies. Though I'm going to cheat. My green smoothies will not be made fresh. I'm going to use the Naked brand of green smoothie since I know I will drink it (I practically chug that stuff its so good).

Re: So I'm going to try this....
i saw a t.v. program about how capitalism has influenced the food industry so much that these people with their own meat & poultry processing plants do terrible things to animals without batting an eyelash. i mean, people have to get fed. that's a fact. but don't just turn a blind eye to HOW kill and process these animals.
after i saw about 10 minutes of the program i barfed (ewww, probable TMI)... and then i didn't eat meat for 3/1/2 weeks. i didn't even miss it. looked up veganism and found healthy, yummy, nutritious food that made me forget why i had ever eaten meat in the first place.
but as someone said earlier in this post, sometimes we're all in a hurry and meat products and/or fast food is the easiest way.
i started eating meat again cause its fast and easy, and(since i'm cuban) ALL MY FAMILY EAT MEAT! heck, i LOVE a fat juicy steak. but i would never critizise someone who takes the vow of not partaking of meat products.
They are a better person than I.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
Switching back to eating meat for me was mainly due to my family. We are a steak and potatoes family. Country fried steak, pork chops, bbq ribs, etc. When I went vegetarian the first time I had a hard time convincing my grandmother that no, chicken was not vegetarian, and no I can't eat fish. Gotta love her though she tried to understand. She even got me a vegetarian cookbook for christmas in 2008. :D Holidays were hard since I could barely eat anything. Even the veggies she cooked had meat in them. :rage: So I switched back. An omnivorous diet was just easier and I could get food really cheap as opposed to eating clean healthy food that emptied my wallet pretty quick. I'm going to try and eat cheap but still eat healthy this time around. I need to go shopping soon today though. We have no vegan food in the house, much less fruits and veggies. Shopping list for today:
Unsweetened Original Flavor Rice Milk - Love this stuff! (used to hate it)
Original Soy Milk
Earth Balance Butter
Cream of Wheat
Rolled Oats
Turbinado Sugar
Soynut Butter - tried this stuff this week. It tastes amazing! I'm in love!
Bread - vegan of course
A Variety of Fruits and Veggies - enough for 2-3 days.

wow...i think i just drooled a little.:) i'm at work so it's about lunch time right now...and i'm starving...
i try to take a week off every once in a while from the omni diet and do veggie for a week just to try and clean the blood and system out. it works wonders.
omni is just easier though (not to mention cheaper...)getting started is the hardest part. once everyone gets acclimated to the eating habit it becomes as easy as washing your hands before and after you handle your bp ;)
if you keep the rythm and continue with your choice no matter what anyone else tells you, it'll also get easier with time because you'll adjust and tweak your lifestyle in order to accomodate your dietary choice. you'll be happy, your family will be happy and you'll all be healthier. :D

Re: So I'm going to try this....
Thanks. I just got done cleaning out my pantry to make room for new foods. I tried to wake hubby up to get him to come shopping with me but he said he set an alarm for 1pm. That man will sleep forever if let him. As soon as he gets up we are going grocery shopping. I haven't eaten anything yet. I had a last farewell meal last night that consisted of almost 3lbs of crab legs, a salad, and some fries.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
All those foods you listed sound absolutely gross. I could never be a vegan. I like meat/dairy too much, and I like junk food. That, and too much fruits/veggies are hell on my digestive system. Be vegan if you want. Just don't give me crap about eating meat and raising meat animals.

May be gross to you but they are oh so yummy to me! Personal preference. And I haven't told you to go vegan or given you crap about your dietary choices. I simply posted about what I feel and what I plan on doing. I was also looking for a few "Good luck" replies. I've gotten a few and it makes me feel good.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
Some people just don't or won't take the time to learn something new.. I love meat I will always eat meat and my fiance knows this. She is a vegatarian and I have no problem with that. Hell I cook veggie meals for her and she makes some of the best filet I've ever had, mmmmmm sorry drooled a lil had a flash back to the filet..
As to those who don't want to get "crap" for they way they eat. Don't sling it at those who have said nothing about it.
Anywho if ya wanna eat veggies all the time DO IT and if not then don't.. I eat more veggies now then I ever have in my life..
And some of the vegan and vegatarian dishes are slammin. Tofu stir fry is wicked good and smells like bacon and maple syurp ( no it was not in there just smelled like it) If ya do not want to be a vegan or vegatarian then you don't have to be. Just open your mind to something different, instead of closing all doors to something new.. ok I'm done, I know veggies are good I got a hot fiance to prove it.
Cheers!

Thanks! I'm not on here to tell people to stop eating meat or change their own eating habits. I wouldn't like it if someone told me to eat meat and give up my beliefs because they think their way is the best way. I'm simply sharing that I PERSONALLY am going vegan and hopefully mostly raw vegan. This is a personal choice for myself and what I think is best for MY body, not yours.
To all you that eat meat, dairy, and eggs. Keep doing your thing. :gj: Trust me, I know how good a steak tastes, but I've decided its just not for me anymore. I can't say I'm sorry for posting about it here. I'm just excited.

.....whenever you hear someone making snide or agressive comments about your personal choices, just ignore them:cool:
from personal experience, i've seen that the people that hate on veggies/vegans (OR ON THE OPINIONS AND BELIEFS OF OTHER PEOPLE IN GENERAL:rage:) and claim they're "meat monsters" are shallow and empty headed and try to give off the impression that they're the "alpha" while in reality they have less substance than a empty drinking glass.
it takes real mental fortitude to recognize what's REALLY good for you and to take action in order to do it. anybody who criticizes other's choices are unhappy with their lives and have to remedy that by poking fun at the conviction of others.
just remember that you're the better person ALL DAY EVERY DAY.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR CHOICE!:D

Re: So I'm going to try this....
I still stand by saying it's not really possible to be completely healthy, and be a strict vegan. Not vegetarian, mind you, but vegan. There are too many essential nutients in animal foods that humans require, and plant sources are scarce, and often in different forms that the body doesn't process exactly the same way.
But don't take my word for it:

The assertion is that people who follow a vegan diet will feel fantastic, and better than they did before, for about the first year or so--but after that, their health will begin to deteriorate.
If this doesn't happen to you, that's really great--but don't go into denial if it does. It's an experiment you're engaging in--I do wish you luck, but also awareness that this isn't a choice that has truly been proven beneficial or safe.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
I think I'll do just fine and I'll get all the nutrients I need. I could go on and on about how unhealthy an omnivorous diet is but I won't and I won't post links to prove I'm right because I respect your opinion and choice to eat that way. Telling me I will will never be completely healthy on this diet is really just rude. I have been talking with many vegans and even some raw vegans that have been on this diet for years and they have no deficiencies, are healthy, and rarely get sick.
Now if you have nothing better to say that to continue to tell me its unhealthy then please leave. This is not why I posted this thread. I posted to get support, not be shot down. How do you know all those scientists and nutritionists are not being paid to say what they say by the food industry? Now I'm not going to get a soap box and start getting all worked up but I have done my research and have chosen this path for myself.
Now I'm going to settle down and eat a yummy salad followed by some grapes and strawberries. Yum!

Do yourself a favor and do your research before you make assumptions on lifestyles you know nothing about... you can't just google something and post it...;)

Re: So I'm going to try this....
Enough! No more arguing from either side. :colbert: That is not what I posted this for. I don't want to argue about which diet is better. I am quite happy with my vegan diet and no one is going to persuade me to change it. I had a nice glass of rice milk and a bowl of oatmeal for dinner. I will probably snack on some broccoli and carrots before heading to the gym tonight.

Re: So I'm going to try this....
Hey there :) I know I already said good luck, just saying it again!
Here is my question, as related to snakes.
If humans have evolved over time to live off of the nutrients of both plants and animals, and you cut one out and could still live healthily...
I wonder if you could do the same thing for snakes. Tofodents? lol. I don't know. I am just curious. I mean, humans are nothing more than just a complex animal. If we could forgo essential nutrients provided by eating meat, could another species do it as well? I assume supplements would have to be provided (do vegan's take supplements to provide the nutrients that eating meat would provide?). Just curious, that's all. Not saying I would do it.
Also, what is the difference between a vegan and a vegetarian? I was under the impression they were the same thing but I guess not?

That's a great question...I'm sure one could make it work...
A vegetarian allows some animal products, such as honey, milk, eggs..products that don't harm the animal...
A vegan allows NOTHING at all...no leather shoes, wool clothing, ect.
