Re: This is just stupid
Texas is the same state that kicks your kids our of school if you choose not to medicate them for a.d.d. I lived in Fort Hood for 5.5 years, thought that may be a good thing to add here.
-
Re: This is just stupid
You know. I checked out that video and I am frankly amazed a appalled. In a day and age when we have to worry about crack and guns and gangs how and why would the length of a kids hair be something that anyone, least of all a school or school board needs to worry about? COME ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The whole country seems to be so involved in stupid meaningless crap while the important stuff is running us over at high speed. This is the dumbest thing I've seen in ages.

i have had many people tell me my 5 year old needs to be on medication for a.d.d. and have refused it. To me he is acting just like a 5 year old should act. I think parents like to put there kids on medicine to give them an excuse to calm there children down. My kids will never be put on medication for a.d.d. or anything like that. Kids are hyper thats how there suppose to be they have alot of energy there young.
-
Re: This is just stupid
thats messed up, how can long hair be distracting to anyone but the person with the long hair? if it was truly a distraction then everyone should have short hair not just boys.
-
Re: This is just stupid
The thing is, if there is a dress code and the parents did agree to abide by it, they are in violation of a code they knew about.
Fighting it or trying to change it may be one thing, but when you know the rules going in, well, you know the rules going in.
No sympathy if that's the case.

i give my son meds but only for when hes at school i figure when hes home i can get on him hardcore unlike a teacher so he stays in check, but at school he got to where he was hitting teachers and other kids so much that they shortened his school day to 3 hours and basicly had a 0.1 gpa (i fought this and changed his school asap). since he has been on his meds he has been getting awards for top behavior, gets selcted to go on special feild trips and has been getting a's and b's.

Re: This is just stupid
My list of things to worry about
1. Violent crime, especially offenses against children
2. Government trying to stomp all over my rights
3. Our shabby educational system
4. Unemployment
5. Sagging economy
Things I could care less about
1. Who smoke pot
2. Who does kinky stuff in their bedroom
3. Who's gay, who's straight and who's in the middle
4. What people look like. And that would include how long some kids hair is for gosh sakes.
This might not be your list of things to worry about and things I could care less about. It's my list. I'm sure if I thought about it for more than 10 seconds I'd come up with a lot more
-
Re: This is just stupid
Yep. Pretty lame. I think there are a lot of people out there that make mountains out of molehills these days. People are getting all worked up over nothing.
My mom used to be a para when we lived in Texas, she always felt bad for those doped up kindergarten kids.

Re: This is just stupid
She used the worst four letter word I know....conservative. How is a boys hair more distracting than a girls? I can think of many conservative reasons why but no real ones.
ADD and ADHD are the most ridiculous diagnoses ever created by doctors. The teachers should be prescribed a "learn how to use different teaching styles to include every child" pill. This is another conservative topic though. That kid is different so give him drugs to make him act like everyone else.
-
Re: This is just stupid
another stupid double standard
-
Re: This is just stupid
I completely agree, how is long hair supposed to distract the other students. If the kid had like, a bright green mohawk or something, I could see that being distracting, and I would understand if they said that long hair distracted him (although that's really not their problem), but they can't regulate that, especially if only boys must have short hair, thats just stupid.
On the subject of ADD/ADHD, it is definitely a bona fide disorder, but is insanely overdiagnosed and misunderstood. Interesting ancedote to that effect: I attended a gifted program in high school with a 5:1 boy girl ratio. Why was this? Because in order to get a gifted designation, you needed to be tested, which was only done if the parents or teacher requested it, most of the people in the program were boys who had been tested for an ADD diagnosis so the teacher could medicate them, but they were found to be gifted and acting up because they were bored. ADD is not the same as messing around because your bored, the child actually has to be UNABLE to concentrate even if they want to, rather than just not wanting to concentrate on the material at hand.

I totally agree with you if it weren't for one thing. That kid is required by law to attend the school within the district that he lives--unless the parents move out of the district, home school him, or send him to parochial school, and in that case, the kid will most certainly not be allowed to have long hair.
Nevertheless, all Mesquite kids are legally required to attend school, so regardless, all Mesquite boys are bound by law to conform to some standard coiffure? I realize it's the rule, but it doesn't seem practical.

Re: This is just stupid
Could be worse. There are actually schools out there that still enforce corporal punishment as well. Trust me, I went to one (Mr. Wentzel had a heck of a swing with that paddle). Maybe it was just Vernon Parish Louisiana that did that. We also had a dress code and had to wear school uniforms. My band teacher would drop us band nerds for push ups if we so much as looked at him the wrong way.

there is no way I would ever allow anyone to touch my child. If a teacher smacked my kid I would be in prison.

Re: This is just stupid
I read that and was appalled! That is the style with the boys right now and while I can understand having a dress code but length of hair is ridiculous and quite frankly kind of sexist. My husband is extremely conservative...23 in the military...and our sons hair is long. In fact I never cut his hair until he was 5 and it was long ringlets down past the middle of his back. Now he is 9 and still wears it long....just not like that! It has nothing to do with schooling or a learning thing. It is ppl being ridiculous!!
Now as far as medicating.....I work at a school and do see a need sometimes...but I think it is much more of a rarely needed thing. Many boys in paticular are just boys.....they are crazy...wild and take a lot longer to settle down and get to a routine. I think you have to take a look at their home life...tramatic experiences, certain foods and routines. Most of the time I think that will fix a lot of the problem.

Re: This is just stupid
We are assigned schools were I live but we didnt like the school riley was assigned to so we used my mothers address to enroll him in another school. I wish we could choose which schools we want here

Re: This is just stupid
Can they even really do that ?? I mean if they let the girls keep it long i really don't think they can make the boys cut there hair ?

Re: This is just stupid
My son is 5 and wants a mohawk LOL. I cant believe that little boy got kicked out of school. And at that age too! Thats crazy. I would think its actually sending a negative message to the kid & who knows what kind of person he will be later on in life when he is being rejected for the way he looks as a toddler. Wow
They dont even think of the psychological affects something like that will have on him.
In the chicago burbs the kids have to go to the school in the district they live in. Around here people purposely move to certain areas just so their kids can go to that school.
It sucks we dont have a choice & Im not too thrilled myself to send my boy to my local school district here. I hope its not as crazy as the one in that video.

Re: This is just stupid
A lot of you are missing a really important point.
It's not about this one kid.
Lots of schools have dress codes which the parents are well informed of prior to children starting school. There may be uniforms and restrictions on personal appearance.
If you don't like that there are other options.
You don't have to send your kids to public school.
I'm ASS uming they knew the rules and chose to disregaurd them.
This is something with which I have some personal experience.
This is also why I have NO sympathy for them and think that they, the ones who violated the rules they agreed to abide by and are now making their child face the consequences of their greedy actions, are wrong.
If you want to go in swinging, something with which I also have some familiarity, it's not cool to use your kid as your weapon.
-
Re: This is just stupid
I spent most of my public education career in Texas and Louisiana.
Yeah, they have the strictest dress codes in the nation.
I put up with it, no big deal, just get the kid a haircut. It's really dumb, but it is what it is.

Re: This is just stupid
Unless there is a health risk (dirty hair, chewing on/eating hair, parasites, etc) I don't believe in forcing a child to cut their hair. My brother had long hair for a long time before they cut it. I think he was around 5-6.
If long hair is considered a distraction, so much so that it requires cutting, then I believe it should be required of ALL STUDENTS, regardless of gender/sex. There is no difference between long hair on boys and long hair on girls in regards to distraction. This is one of those "boys play with trucks, girls play with dolls" things. Boys, traditionally, have short hair. Girls, traditionally, have long hair. I can't stand this stuff, and the fact that they were willing to expell a child only because he won't cut his hair is horrible. A child, who is willing to go to school, behave, get an education, is going to be kicked out of his school and made an example of only because his hair is a few centimeters too long. Now, if this boy was bringing guns to school, being violent with classmates, or was failing out of school, I could see how actions would need to be taken, but HIS HAIR?
And THIS is one of the reasons I am going to home school my kids!

Ok, I'll give it one more go.
You do realize that this isn't about that kid and his hair, right? His hair is not the issue, it's the rule having that hair breaks that is the real issue.
It's breaking a rule that the parents agreed to abide by that is the issue, not the reason for the rule. The reason for the rule is not relevant to this. If you want to change the rule, that also is not relevant to this.
The only issue here is that the parents are using their child to flaunt a rule, dumb though it may be, that they agreed to uphold when the put their child in that school.
The school is perfectly within it's rights and should take actions to bring them in line with the guidelines they have set out.
Make an exception for him and his hair and what's next?
You know there will be a next if an exception is made for him, right?

Like it or not, thats the way much of the country is.
There is a legitimate argument that a boy having long hair is a distraction, simply because it is not the norm.
I don't agree with it, but there you have it.
We've come a long way in the last 60 years. That's not all that long for so much social change. We'll keep at it as a nation, and maybe by the time you decide to have kids whenever that may be, they won't have to cut their hair short. There already are plenty of school districts that allow boys to have long hair, facial hair, and even crossdress.
-
Re: This is just stupid
Sorry I don't think dress code has anything to do with length of hair and still think it is sexist and discrimnating unless you say everyone. If they want to say it has to be a "normal" color that is one thing.
And Im not sure about MN but in AZ.....I would say longer hair is more the norm in young MS boys....at least at my school and most the younger boys on the Disney and Nick network. Just me though......
-
Re: This is just stupid
I live in Minnesota nowadays. I got to watch my little brother go to school here, and realized that it is way less strict. No dress code, no uniforms, and it didn't matter what length your hair was. He actually spent his last high school years looking a lot like Zakk Wylde lol.
I spent most of my school years in Texas and Louisiana. It was strict, but from that I gained self discipline. I missed it. It was a shock to my system to move up to Kansas for my last 2.5 years of high school. No uniforms, the band sucked, kids didn't have the same respect for teachers, and PDA everywhere. Kids were making out in the hallway between classes. For me that was just a big no no, if we had done anything like that in Louisiana we would have been punished.
All in all, I would say I am on the fence here. I have spent time on both sides of the fence, and can't really say that I like either one. A happy medium would be nice though.

Kids don't know what "normal" is.
Like it or not, "the way" isn't a good enough reason for me.
Just to be clear, the rest of this isn't directed at you.
This is about adults forcing their children to think a certain way instead of learning, emphasis on learning-the key ingredient to a solid education, on their own when presented with a plethora of ideas. Unfortunately most parents want their children to be just like mommy and daddy.
America is supposed to be a "melting pot" of cultures, religions, ideas, backgrounds, ethnicities, etc... So having these silly little rules to try and maintain normality is ridiculous.
There must not be any children at that school from a culture that wears turbans because that child might be faced with removing it and having to get a hair cut to fit in or face expulsion. How absurd would that be.

Who wrote the rule? Maybe it was applicable 5, 10, or 20 years ago but is it applicable now? The reason for the rule and wanting to change the rule are completely relevant to this.
Remember that rule that African Americans had to sit in the back of the bus and give up their seats to white people as needed? Then one day Rosa Parks found a courage beyond commendation and "disobeyed".
I think both instances, the kid with a hairstyle and a woman on a bus, are equivalent though history may not represent it that way. In both cases a group was enforcing their beliefs on unwilling participants and someone stood up for what they believed in against the will of the masses.
Wearing a uniform is one thing but having any say in the physical features of a child or person is completely different.
If an exception was made for the child, who is the responsibility of his parents for the first 18 years of his life and at that age doesn't understand the gravity of the situation, and is allowed to go to school without missing a day or suffering any other adverse effects from the situation, nothing would happen. Now that he's been out of school for a month or more and away from the friends that he misses, he is suffering and will most likely have long term pscychological effects. I can't say good or bad because who knows, maybe he'll turn out to be the politician who gets gay marriage passed on the federal level since he's being persecuted for so long as a child. But obviously the child isn't important here......................
What is a rule about hairstyles like? Maybe red or brown hair is distracting, so children should have to bleach it. Black or blue or green eyes are distracting so make sure they have blue contacts before the first day of school. If your skin is too tan or dark, find some make up or paint. Now that everybody matches (Yay!) there will be no distractions in class. Wait, didn't somebody try that....?

Re: This is just stupid
you know what i have a 2 year old son and we havent touched his hair i dont think it should be in a schools dress code how long has to be or what style what ever happen to freedom of expression.. i think it should be up to the parents on how a childs hair should be not the schools.

While it may be true that the parents had a choice on where to send their kid (more than likely not most schools are "assigned"), it's also true that just because a rule was explained to them in the beginning, it does not follow that they MUST obey said rule.
People will follow rules until they "wake up" and find those rules interferring with their personal liberties.....
If a law banning the 9 is passed, how many people also give up their snakes obeying such a "rule?"
There can be rules in place, and we can follow them until we find them intolerable and then it's up to us and purely our option to continue following those rules or not (regardless of whether we knew of the rule in the beginning, we can always affect change).

Just to clarify, I'm in MN now but I grew up in the south (Texas and Louisiana). MN has pretty relaxed dress codes, and yes there are plenty of places in the country where long hair on boys, especially younger ones, is in fact very very common.
It was the places I grew up in where boys with long hair would often get "looks", and parents would often have to hear people questioning why they let their boy have long hair. That's just part of the culture there. And yes, before anyone needs to say it, it is because sexism and homophobia are part of the culture as well.
I like it better here.

That only works in fairy tales. Some rules are in place for a reason.
A Muslim woman in FL wanted to have her picture taken with her Niqaab on, covering her face. That seems smart.
Gotta draw the line somewhere.

Re: This is just stupid
I have two sons, 9 and 14 years old. My wife home schools both of them. It is awesome. Everyone can sleep in, take days off and make them up whenever, work at there own pace, grow a 2 ft green mohawk (my 14 yr old has had a long mohawk since he was 5), whatever as long as the work gets done. Another benefit is they do the work until they understand it. An 85% is required on all of their work. They are still learning from the same textbooks at the same pace as public school kids, but are not left in the dust if they don't get something right away.
My kids have both been to public schools. We have always given them a choice. They both have chose to stay home. When they went to public schools, I had to deal with "professionals" telling me what drugs my kids should be on or that my kids hair is a distraction, or they have to get certain shots. The public schools don't even do a very good job of doing what they are supposed to do, which is teach, but they have all this advice on how I should do my job? I just avoid the whole thing and let the kids stay home and actually learn things.

So then, if I have this right, you not only decided not to deceive a school by agreeing to follow their rules and then disobeying but you also accepted responsibility for fulfilling the shortcomings you found with the public school system?
You didn't get all butthurt because a rule you agreed to follow became an issue that you had no valid reason to disagree with? You didn't get all bent because when someone laid out the guidelines for participation, which you agreed to follow, then chose to disregaurd, caused your child, not you, the one who actually caused the problem by not following the rules you agreed to, to be punished?
Heh, good job.

Just so everyone is perfectly clear. If BG ever saw Willy or anyone from this site he would immediately go up and introduce himself. It's never personal on the net with Big Gunns...unless someone makes it so. BG just has to call it like he sees it.....and this is how he sees it. If you're gonna "attack"(you know what BG is saying) other people with your posts....you should expect it in return.....and not cry about it when it happens...... Not everyone is weak and will turn tail and run yah know:taz:
Where BG's buddy with Big Gunns famous quote in his sig?:D

neil, you're either an idiot or the perfectr imitation of one.
The points I was referring to were the ones her friends, you know those guys, virtually in a league of their own, are giving their little puppet.
Maybe you should just shut your yap when you don't know the facts.
When you ASS ume, as with all you do, you make a REALLY big ass out of yourself.
As for what you would do....who asked?

So what you're trying to say is this. You're outta your "league" with her "friends" so you have to pick on her here where you have "friends". Trying to link her to that site so the mods may not like her. Smart move, but BG sees through it.
Don't tell BG you're banned over there along with Patty? If it will make yah feel any better, that leeetle guy over there(not Larry...he has some Gunns:D) isn't BG's best buddy either, but only because he hasn't met him.
Maybe she came here to see what BG has been up to. BG does have fans yah know.;):D
OH yeah...it's very hard for BG to "shut his yap", but he'll try...just for you.;):D Then again....he might do like you do....and answer whether "asked" or not.:P
Hope BG has the "facts" now.:P

I agree.
I don't mind a spirited debate with opposing view points but when "the other side" starts calling people names instead of contributing positively, it becomes pointless to respond to "the other side".

Re: This is just stupid
Somehow somewhere someone got a pic of BG and Willy and posted it on youtube. They got our names wrong though. BG is on the right in the red shirt. They couldn't have picked a better song for us.

Re: This is just stupid
Long or short hair is not really important. I don't see how it would be anymore distracting than say, shaving his head.
The kid looks like a little girl with his hair like that, and if his parents want him to go around looking like a little gay boy (pillow biter), that's their right.
I feel sorry for the kid. Spend 10 bucks and get that boy a freakin' haircut.
