Just on a side note.
BP's don't have to hit 500-700g in a year. They also don't have to eat every week. This is actually what is called power feeding. It is done to speed up the breeding process. Its also not necesary. Yes most do it, but is better not to. A 2 year old ball at 400-500g isnt a bad thing. (unless of course your trying to beed said such ball and then thats just not going to hapen unless its a male :) ). It is better to not power feed your ball and to let females get 2000g+ at 3y+ before first breeding her.
Just my own thaughts on the matter. Not that they count too much.
Yes, I agree. I've been acused of feeding too small of a prey item to my snakes, but I don't think I need to get my snakes up to breeding size in one year. But if the previious owner had him for 4-5 months, he's probably 5-6 months old. I would expect a 6 month old male ball python to be somehwere around 300+ grams. 185 is what I would expect for a 2-3 month old ball python.
Thanks!

I'd be interested to hear what others have to say about average weights. My male who was born in September of 09' is only 159 grams.
And very nice pickup! He's got a sweet face :gj:
Re: New/Rescued/Kinda Pin
I think that looks like a nice pin, he looks healthy, don't rush to power feed him. Congrats :)
Re: New/Rescued/Kinda Pin
Seems a bit of confusion on what constitutes power feeding? Feeding a hatchling that is willing to eat every 4-5 days one appropriately sized meal is not power feeding.
That snake is an OK weight for his age. He looks healthy. Nice girth proportional to his length, etc. He is not starving by any stretch.
He may have been a late starter, eating smaller meals, whatever, but his weight is fine.

Re: New/Rescued/Kinda Pin
Thanks to both of you. No, I won't be power feeding him. He'll get a mouse once a week. My only concern is his timidness. I know he won't eat live. So prekilled will be where I start. He could surprise me, but he has got to be the most timid ball python, I've ever seen. I was holding him last night when I got home with him. He just about wouldn't come out of a ball, when I did get him to stretch out, he would flinch with every one of my movements as well as his. He saw his tail move and he flinched and went right into a ball. It was kinda funny. He'll be fine. I'll feed him next week. Then we'll see where' we're at.
Thanks Again!

i've got a new Albino that is very skiddish too. My wife walks by across the room and he jumps back. Hopefully yours and mine will get better with time. Good luck to you.

Yeah, that's funny. I've got a Female Lesser a little bigger than the Pinstripe and she's a hisser. Hasn't struck at me, but she will let you know she doesn't want to be bothered. Amazing how these snakes almost have personallities!

no problem jim. good to see its in good hands and you are not rushing it to get up to breeding size. Gonna make a great future breeder wither its male or female since u havent popped it yet. Im sure youve posted it before but how many bps do u own?i currently own 24 and i can honestly say its hard not to keep the number from getting larger. especially when i see craigs list adds for them. i took in a normal female around 4-6 years old from craigs list, decent weight but had sum serious healed scars on her side. Needless to say shes doing much better here and got the nick name scarface even tho theres no scars on her face.
