Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
looking good but i will point out a couple problems( in my book)
1 that will not go around corners or up stairs very well.
2 it will take at least 2 if not possible 3 people to move that hug sucker.
3 that doors for the front will need with to be sliding glass (which suggest some metal U tracks to ride in as well as some locking type device) unless your setting it up to hold tanks I am just glancing at the pictures mostly lol..
4 in my book i set th vents ot one side of the unit with an opengi /closing type 9 liek the old wood stoves ) to control the amount of air movement in and out to prevent drafts and uneven heating..
I also switched to rack to prevent the issues I had with my cages ( mainly being space since they measusred 4ft*2ft*2ft and it took 2 grown men to move them ( since i not able to lift them due ot my cp i hadto pay 2 people to move them for me )

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
thanks man if i ever move out of this house and well when i do im gonna have to build another rack cause my boa well be hugh by then so prolly build a 6x2x2 or 6x3x2 and put my bp on top of that. hopefully ill have a boat load of them so i have to make a hugher rack, but ill make it where that one comes apart in sections. but for doors, i was thinkin of door that swing out cause it much cheaper then buyin U racks which i cant find anywhere.
do you know where i can find U tracks that will hold two plexiglass panels and a lock for them???? if so tell me know so i can go get them. i rather have sliding doors then swinging doors
get back to asap or send me a PM or if you have the info i need email me at timderiksen@gmail.com
one more thing its not that heavy just 4 1/4 sheets of 1/2" birch plywood hahahahahahahahahaha its a beast

finish coat

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
I just want to point this out, but that seems like a mighty fire hazard with all of those heat lamps, squished in between the wood enclosures like that. And that the top enclosures would get extremely warm from the rising heat, not to mention, lamps themselves would put out a lot of heat in one area, imagine all of that heat rising and overheating the top levels lights.
Unless you're doing it just for a small coil flourescent light.... just for light.
I can't see it being very safe.

what????? them lamps dont get that hot also if you say heat rises, in which it does, then you dont really have to heat the other cages as much cause it already warm.
i have a 2 cage rack in my room right now and never had a problem. everything is well ventilated. my bottom cage had 4 vents all adjustable. I have experimented with opening and closing different vents and what the response is i found out if you put one vent on the top where your day time heat lamp is and then one on the bottom where then cool side is. then you get a good circulation of air in the cage. like you said heat rises
so thanks for your thoughts if my house catches on fire you will be the first to know ahahhahahhahahahha:banana:

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
it's different, I would call it a good different. Could hold alot of dust and be hard to clean though. Correct?
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
nah total opposite.
with the clear/sealer finish on the bottoms of each cage will smooth it back out
but besides that its some great stuff. 10bucks a can ive used three cans so for
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
So how much has this costed you so far? I assume you aren't doing a running total, but ballpark.
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
hmm about 180 in wood. 60 in paint rest i had plexiclass i have. then just 20bucks in change for hardware
is that a lot?? remember im making this to my spec not someone elses im making to be amazing looking something you could sell so when im done im gonna put it through a photo shoot something someone would want to buy or have me build. "not trying to sell anything just explaining why im going all out on this"
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
my subwoofers and box was like 600 and change to put together
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
understood, showing off your handywork. I would too if I had the time/money to build something like that...got the skills but not the space.
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
yeah im just showing off what i can do you know you have to sell your self and your work and what you build sells it self you just gotta put it out there
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
as long as there is a demand for it. But I may very well design an eclosure system much like this one.

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
well if you need any help on how to just hit me up pm and ill give you me info

Exactly what I suggested in the first place. lol. www.outwaterplastics.com You can find metal or plastic there. Of course the plastic is much cheaper and actually preferred by most.
I'm not sure if you know this, but real glass is much cheaper than plexi or acrylic. I would not think for a second about putting anything less that 1/4" plexi or acrylic in those cages......they will escape.
As far as the heat lamps go, I'd have to agree about the fire hazard. You can remedy this by using a rheostat or thermostat. A 60W lightbulb in an inclosed area can heat up to nearly 300 degrees.

thanks man there Massive audio tw12's 500watt rms each

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
this is all true but if i get good ventilation i should be fine I THINK I HOPE SO as for as plexi when i make my door frams i cut a 1/8'" rove then slide the plexy in and make sure its a tight fit then i seal it . i know snakes are strong and can break tanks but im not to worried about the doors since i make them really well built. . this is all trial and error what i mess up on i can always fix. all in all I'm learning more and more.
i wish i could afford the U tracks with 1/4 lexan. which is 200 times stronger than glass. shoot plexiglass is 100 times stronger than glass
we'll see what happens ill keep a close eye out on temps in the hood area. i did leave the back of the hoods open for ventilation but if i have to ill cut holes on the sides and put vents on there too. and maybe a small fan in the vent if i can find something like that
thanks for the advice i really take it to heart and it has changed some of my thinking about somethings and things to watch out for. i got some good ideas if heat becomes a problem
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
well making the doors today but this is the hard part is getting everything straight and i was only able to get !/3 of the hardware dangit
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
hmmm really didn't do alot today mostly ran around getting hardware and picking out hardware and could never make up my mind. at first i wanted brass then couldn't match the hinges to the locks and handles. so i decided on going with polished stainless then couldn't match hinges to that. then i figured out that i would just go with the stainless and paint the hinges so thats what im doing but i did do some wood working i cut all the door frames and did all thing things i needed to do to put the plexi in the frames
pics
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k3...c/IMG00262.jpg
heres how i hold the plexi in place
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k3...c/IMG00268.jpg
i cut a grove with the table saw and have the blade height set to 3/8"

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
Hi,
What kind of gaurd is there to stop the animals getting in contact with the bulbs?
Did you mount mesh in the holes or is it built into the shades - and how do you hold those securely in place?

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
Those are GOOD LOOKING cages. Only thing that bothers me a little is the enclosed areas for the heat lamps...
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
I have a suggestion. With the lamps behind the doors maybe add some comp fans. A hole on each side with an intake fan and a outtake to keep the temps down in the space. But that is a awesome set of cages.

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
thats what i was thinking of doing if i have problems with heat the backs are open so it isn't enclosed completely heres a pic from the rear view

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
That looks pretty good, but I still think the computer fan is a great idea.
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
same here i thought of that while back ago maybe like on day 4 or 5 and today is day 8 of the build
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
i know this doesn't add to the strength of the locking of the door but it helps and it helps keep the door 100% closed. its little magnets how cute

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
What kind of costs are you looking at for this thing? I really like your design but instead I'm thinking about building something similar with xpvc.
-
Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
im looking at 300 in part right now but if i was gonna sell it i would sell it for 2g's just cause of labor

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
I don't think anyone would pay 2K for it.
What types of paints, sealants did you use?
You may run into the problem of seriously harming the snakes you put in it due to off-gassing of the products used to finish the surface.

Re: here we go building a 4 cage rack
nah everything should be ok you gotta let everything set and harden and let it self ventilate before you putting any reptile in the cage. perforable when the smell of paint is gone wait another few days to intorduce you reptile to its new home. it should matter what type of paint you use as long at it is not toxic and has no LEAD
so people use melamine well thats made with phromaldahide sorry can spell but i tried

You should get a thermostat to keep them under control. Since it looks like you are going to have a lamp on each side, you will probably need two...or have a smaller wattage bulb on the cooler side. A thermostat will keep the lamps at a set temp. even if the room temp. fluctuates.
