But while i was handling him he was super easy, just sat in my hand then cruised up my arm and discovered the almighty neck warmth, lol. Once on my shoulder he wrapped his tail around a shirt button and i actually had to work him for like 5 straight minutes to get him to come down.
My girl was pretty cage defensive and very vocal when I first got her. Striked at me a few times but never got bit. She calmed down pretty quick though. It's been over a year now and she's as sweet as can be. She will still get vocal sometimes if I wake her up but stops as soon as I pet her or pick her up. Give him some Time I'm sure he'll be great!

First feeding is in the books!
I was worried because he had only ever had live mice and I was offering a thawed rat (weaned) and he did not want to strike at or coil it while I was dancing it with the tongs, in fact he was downright scared of it. But I left it in there and covered up the tub and an hour later I had no rat and a nice lumpy python.

OK, so after a week of acclimation i have 3 handling session under my belt since Wednesday, and so far; pretty darn good. He hisses like crazy when i'm trying to get him out, but once in hand he's cool. Notably, the first session involved a ton of hissing, a ton of striking and a ton of pee and musk (super pleasant) the second only hissing and one mock strike, the third, hissing and no striking at all, although there is some musk, but i think it may have just rubbed off him as opposed to the first time when i literally saw the stream coming out. 2 out of the three he was nervous in hand at first (or maybe i was) but then chilled out big time after a little while. To be honest i am just working on managing my own expectations. I know young burms are supposed to be like this, its just that both my boas were puppy tame right out of the box so this is a bit of an adjustment for me, especially considering how much bigger he's going to get and how much faster that growth is going to occur compared to the boas.

Great attitude, bad eatter
Little punk is a mouser. I dont know what possessed him to take the rat the first feeding but since then he's refused twice, but during the second refusal i offered a mouse and he snatched and wrapped it in a split second. That second time i had tried heating the mouse and the rat together, but i guess i wasn't thorough enough to really get the mouse scent onto the rat. On the advice of a snake group friend, this week i am getting some soiled mouse substate from my local pet store in which to thaw and heat the rat. I've also been told chicken broth on the rat might entice him, that sounds like a long shot to me but it certainly would be more convenient and less gross than mouse leavings.
On the brighter side, he's proving to be a very nice little snake. He still hisses when i open his lid, but no striking, just some noise and then goes into puppy-dog mode as soon as i get a hand on him. I've even started letting my son handle him.

Oye!!
This time I stored, thawed, and heated the rat with a mouse, then I smashed mouse blood and mouse poop all over the rat, even plucked out some mouse fur and kind of massaged it into the rat – still no dice!
So again he just ate a mouse but at least today also happened to be Gimel's feeding day so at least the rat did not go to waste. Incidentally, she smashed that rat harder than I have ever seen her do. All that mouse nastiness must have spiced it up for her just right, lol.
