what substrate will not hold in heat from uth
i see alot of questions about the substrate temp not being right while the temp on the glass is where the snake wont burn it self if if burrows.. so ill ask the question of what substrate lets the heat through to the top of the substrate or heats the substrate without having a temp on the glass of like 100f-110f? i dont want to hear people that have newspaper or papertowels.im talking about real substrate like bark, mulch, aspen and all the other ones. oh and will the temps change on both sides when you open the top. what i mean is if i open the top to use my temp gun will the temps be off because i opened the top and let cool air in? thanks
i hope this can help clear up the questions about temps on the glass are 95f and the top of the subtrates are 78f-80f.

Hi,
In general most of the substrates used should let enough heat through if you adjust the thickness right.
I say in general because there are always unexpected hiccups.
Oh and newspaper still counts as a real substrate.
If you are quick about it I don't think the substrate will have time to cool down a great deal just in the time it takes you to open the lid - if you opened it then changed the waterbowl and spotcleaned etc then yeah it will have cooled significantly.
Air temps will obviously cool much faster which could be a factor if you were using accurite probes etc but tempguns should be better. Of course if anyone knows different sing out.

I have never had this problem I just bury the temp probe so that the glass is about 91 and the snakes figure it out. Most of them clear all the substrate out of the way when in there hide and and laying on bare glass anyways. Never even heard of this as being a problem before. BUt if it is such an issue just use news paper or paper towels.

Re: what substrate will not hold in heat from uth
i started using aspen shavings for my 14 snakes and havent gone back its great for humidity and temperature not to mention its less of a mess than other substrates (coconut husk, jungle earth, etc.) its easy to clean and it doesnt cost much if you buy a bulk bag, i find that it the snakes arnt gettin enough heat from the UTH they tend to move some of the bedding around the UTH to get more heat, IMO its the best
Cheers!

I use a layer of PAPER TOWEL covered by aspen shavings in my tank. in the hide with the UTH beneath, I move most of the aspen out of the way leaving a very thin layer(basically just scattered) this leaves the paper towel exposed and I set my Thermostat to 93 and my probe reads around 91-92 depending on the time of day.
Hope I helped!

where is your probe located? under the paper towel or on top of the substrate or on top of the paper towel under the substrate?

I tore a small hole in the paper towel directly in the center of the UTH and ran the probe down the back glass, under the towel, and through the hole and now it lays among the (scattered) aspen ontop of the paper towel. This way I am getting the temp that my girl is in direct contact with and I can make adjustments from there!
There was a thread on substrate here that the guy showed a picture(computer drawing). I tried looking for it for you but I had no luck
Hope I helped!
