Anyone near s/e WI.. help rescue burm??

There's a guy in Delavan, Wisconsin that has his 3 1/2 to 4 foot burmese in a tiny octogon tank, probably a 10 gallon tall... It has no heat source and no food... Until 2 days ago it was being housed with a ball python which has since been rescued...

    Read the story here:
    http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=82464

Anyone in the area think they can help??? I can probably come up with a way to get it away from this guy, but I don't feel I'm experienced enough or have enough room to keep a snake that will get so large... Anybody that can offer a good home for it and maybe help pool a little money to offer the guy to see if he'll give it up... Please let me know.

I tried the ASPCA website and there's really nothing helpful in WI. and I know that the one and only animal shelter in this county doesn't accept reptiles at all. I'm going to post some more on like craigslist and whatnot, and make some phone calls... But I really don't think the delavan police are going to do much about it.

    Thank you everyone for reading.

You could also try the following, but I'm not sure if they will take a Burm?

    www.serpentsanctuary.org

    or

The owner here has a nice shop and knows his stuff, could be worth a try?

    www.reptilerapture.net

In the process of posting on forgottenfriends and will check that out next. Thank you!

I also called C (if you didn't read the original post C is the girl that technicaly owned the ball and used to live with the jerk that has the burm) and asked if she would be willing to help try to talk the guy into giving up his snake. She said she'll help as much as she can but doesn't think the guy will be willing to part with it as he "likes to show it off"

I still think my bf can intimidate the guy into giving it up without having to get into anything actually illegal. According to C the guy paid about $200 for it so if we attempt to offer him money to part with it like some ppl suggested, I think we'll have to come up with atleast that much... Lame...

Thanks everyone. I will keep you all posted except for tomorrow when I don't work and thus won't have internet access.

    Talking Happy update!

Just as I logged in to send an email to Heather, the director of serpentsanctuary.org, I had a message from her in my inbox! She just happened to be browsing craigslist and found my listing!

She says they can take the burm, get it any medical attention it might need and put it up for adoption. I'm pretty sure they're located in Janesville or Beloit, not too far from here.

I'm so happy! I was waiting for somebody to agree to take it before trying to actually obtain it from the owner/abuser. Now I can try to put a plan into action. I just hope we can persuade the guy to give it up without hassle or having to buy it from him. I don't get paid for another week and don't have any $$ to offer him right now. Hopefully we can just use logic, guilt and a tiny bit of friendly intimidation to get it from him! Wish me luck on that one, I'm going to try to go over there tonight or tomorrow!

*jumps up and down with excitement*

Thank you all for your support and advice!!! Will let you know Wednesday (when I can get back online) if I managed to get it from him yet.

I would appreciate it if anyone could help show some love to www.serpentsanctuary.org by dropping a line to tell Heather how much we appreciate her efforts... Personally I'm going to donate some money to the non-profit as soon as I can! What a godsend. Now I can stop asking every person that walks into the liquor store if they know anybody that has snakes and could take it! lol I think I'm going to start scaring the customers away if I don't stop!

Re: Anyone near s/e WI.. help rescue burm??

Hey, Dizzy, I forgot to mention something. If you offer him money for the snake, he may just turn around and buy another one. The trick is to somehow convince him that he cannot keep animals in that manner. This may be difficult, if not impossible to do - some people you just can't get through to. But, when you talk to him, I would make sure to stress that he is not taking good care of his animal, and that it will die if he doesn't treat it (or future pets) much better than he has been. You may even want to just bring him a care sheet. I understand that he's abusive and is probably not going to give two rat behinds about the snake's care. But, if he absolutely refuses to part with the snake, and the police or rescue organizations can't take it from him, then the next best step is going to be to educate him as best you can. Guys like him only want the burms for intimidation and bragging rights. I know a guy that fits the same description. If you can get it through his thick head that he's going to have an ugly, sickly, and very UNimpressive snake if he doesn't step up his game, then he may be more willing to listen. You could even go into the vet costs and whatnot. Make him see what a commitment this snake is, because right now I don't think he understands. Maybe he'll give it up to you then.
