i think its really funney...
how quickly everyone jumps on the anti- D3 movement. people look at what the media says about their finances and losses and automatically assume that management incompetence is to blame. everyone over simplifies the issue to Toyota= good, D3= bad without really looking into the issues. Before I go any further, i would like to say that, YES, the big 3 messed up up on more than one occasion. That being said, i have never heard on the news how much money Toyota lost on the new tundra, or how much Nissan has lost on the Titan. If i can find the numbers i will post them, but it is measured in the billions. this from the companies that everyone thinks are perfect, and just happened to perfectly release their new trucks as gas went through the roof.
No one mentions how GM has more tipple the dealers of toyota, but can't close them with its downsizing efforts because of dealer protection laws.
No one mentions how all of those layoffs over the past year or to are still getting paid 95% of their wages because of the UAW.
this is not supposed to be a full out, go big 3! speach. rather, i just want people to try and realize that this whole issue is much more complex than people realize.

Have you looked at who sponsered those protection laws?
The UAW is full of, well, not necessarily greedy, though there is plenty of that, but people who saw a big business that would support them. A business that would not only support them, but if they joined with their fellow workers, would capitulate to demands to keep production online.
The UAW asked for too much, got too much and is now in the position of being the only person at the party to have eaten any cake, denied having eaten that cake, and has a face caked with frosting.
Who else gets paid so much when laid off? Who can afford it? If you had to give that up to work, would you? Would you deny it to your fellow worker if it meant more jobs? Would you be willing to work for enough to support yourself in comfort knowing that you had to fend for yourself in your old age, not look to a pension plan and union payouts?
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?

Your assessment of the UAW is entirely correct and no, if i was in the position of many of those workers, i would not be willing to take the full action that is required to prune their wages down to size. that's why the decisions that have to be made shouldn't be made by the workers on the bottom. I'm sure they were also against all of the layoffs, even tho they had to be done. Like many people have said, this is one of those problems that may only be able to be solved by Ch 11. I just pray that it doesn't come to that, and that the government realizes whats at stake.
