May seem like a stupid question, but... what exactly is the difference between the 29 gal and a 30 'breeder'; is it just how shallow it is?

a 30 breeder is not as tall and wider than the 29.the 29 is more of a fish tank

Okay, but generally speaking, will a 29 be okay for the both of them? (obviously in separate tanks)
Or should I got with two 30s?

I think you should go with the two 30 gallons for floor space, like they said height doesn't really matter. They will house a fully grown adult without a problem.

i think the 12 inch width of the 29 gallon may be too narrow for a full grown ball(especially larger females) and that the extra 6 inches added to the width and length of a 30 gal will greatly benefit the full grown animal.
