    Major Rodent Feeds Compiled

Just thought this might be nice to have all in one spot. Mazuri wont let me copy past, so just linked to their site. They have a new 11f formula now too.

    Mazuri

    6f-- www.mazuri.com/PDF/5M30.pdf --~$30/50lbs

    9f
-- www.mazuri.com/PDF/5M68.pdf --~$35/25lbs (Way higher price than before?)

    11f
    -- www.mazuri.com/PDF/5M99.pdf --Local only, prices/sizes vary.

    Harlan-Teklad

Harlan has a ridiculous number of rodent feeds, and most people cant get them anyway, but heres a link.-- www.teklad.com/rodent.asp

    Kent

Can be ordered by some TSC and very readily available near Kent factories. Dealer locator here. http://www.kentfeeds.com/Dealer-Locator.aspx

Product labels not available online for rodent diets, pm me if you have questions/problems, or go straight to your local dealer or Kent themselves. Kent has been very helpful for me.

According to Kent, they only ship the 19% in 2 ton (80 bags) shipments, so good luck finding a dealer willing to order it for you.

    Re: Major Rodent Feeds Compiled

Well, just a cautionary, you may want to refrain from posting the cost of any diets unless it has been specified by the dealers themselves. You don't want someone to see that you can buy it for $13 at Joe's crab shack, where they can only get it for $19 at their dealer or vice versa.

I do want to also caution that people may not want to use any higher than a 19% protein diet for their domestic rats.

Here's what I take away from all of these percentages of protein in diets and why 18-19% is a good number.

Growing rats need a higher percentage of protein for growth, cell repair, bone density and muscle growth and overall health. The same can be said for breeding and nursing females that have a taxing amount of energy going into raising their young.

Adult rats at a year of age do not need the same high amount of protein. This is especially true for males.

Females, nursing does and growing youngsters could do with a 20-22% diet, but it must be noted that high protein diets do have a certain risk involved.

Rats are sensitive to certain foods, and these foods or diets high in protein cause allergic reactions. Food allergies are also remarkably genetic, with having the allergies passed on to a certain degree to the offspring.

Allergies from a high protein diet can cause severe itching and inflammation. You may even see the raised areas on the skin if all the hair has been scratched away. The constant scratching can do damage to the skin, abrasions, and leaves the doors open for many kinds of infections. Bacterial and fungal. Both of which can be quite painful and debilitating to the rats unless treatment is exercised to control the spread. (A diet with too high of fat can cause the same allergic reactions of skin lesions along with obesity, which increases the chance of stroke and diabetes)

Rats do need animal proteins, they are omnivores, but do not do well with high percentages of animal proteins like some found in cat diets. I do not recommend cat kibble ever, some may do, but I see no reason for it. My own kittens food is close to 30% protein!

For rats (especially males), too high of a protein can cause organ problems with liver and kidneys. Over time this can cause liver and kidney failure, and ultimately death.

So how can we feed an entire colony what they need, while supporting nursing does and growing youngsters and not over doing it for our adult male rats that have different needs?

16-19% protein. If you wanted to do like me, feed the 19% to nursing females and the 16% to the resting females or breeding rats. That's how I do it, and I feel that it is doing quite well for me.

    Re: Major Rodent Feeds Compiled

I agree with Connie. There's so much variation in pricing depending on where you buy from. I actually just got a 50# bag of mazuri 9F last night for $25 I guess that it's actually replacing the 6F for some reason but I'm not sure what the real differences between the two are.

NM apparently the only real difference is a little bit higher fat content in the 9F compared to the 6F. I usually feed the regular Mazuri rodent diet since that's all I could get for a while (had to special order the 6F) and never had any issues with that even though the protein content may be a bit high (23%)

    Re: Major Rodent Feeds Compiled

I didnt even think about that about prices, but I also think they need to be included somehow, since that is a major factor on which one to choose. If a mod or admin could just toss in there somewhere that prices are not specific and may vary by location, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks for the post Connie.

    Mazuri 6F is 16% protein, 9F is 19% protein.

Yeah, my 9f is 25 bucks for 50 lbs too, and it used to be cheaper on Mazuri's site too (btw, the Mazuri prices are estimates/rounded from Mazuri themselves), but when i just looked they now have an 11f formula and the 9f went up in price, and down to a 25lb bag.

The 11F has always been available, and the 9F has always been listed in 25 lb bags for 25-30$ on their website. That was the main reason I only ever ordered the 6F, believing the 9F was going to be much more expensive.

Huh...I have never seen the 11f until now. I could have easily mixed up the bag size for the 9f, but the price def. went up.

I don't know... I've always seen the 11F on their website, and when I first got into rats a few years ago, the bag size was the same as it is now for the 9F. There are several sections that show rodent diets, so maybe you and I aren't looking in the same spot.

But feed prices are definitely rising, the price of corn and gas has pushed my Mazuri up 2$ since I began buying it a couple of years ago.

No it's not. They are both 16% protein. 6F has 6% fat and 9F has 9% fat. They both run around $22-$24 for me at the feed store I go to.
