So Let's Talk Thermostats

I have two snakes which means I need either four thermostats or two that control two separate heat sources.

I've been looking at products and have found several that seem to come recommended by BP.net folks, but I'm confused. The ones that say they control two devices do not appear to have two probes. How does that work? Surely I'm missing something.

After reading another thread, I found a recommendation for Herpstat II, but was wondering if there was anything just a little less expensive out there before I settled on that one. I really don't need any fancy features, just two probes for two devices and easy-to-program controls and display.

I live in Texas and have thus far been able to control things on the cool side without a thermostat and the warm side of my original BP, Alice, with a homemade one my hubby made. Now winter is coming and I have two BPs. It's getting much cooler inside at night now and I only have the capability of controlling one device. HELP

Hi, the herpstat II controls two different heating elements. It has two seperate outputs as well as two probes. The herpstat pro has four outputs and four probes. I used the herpstat pro last season to control the heat of a female rack, male rack, incubator, and lighting.

Personally I think your over thinking this you don't need two heating elements you only need one and let the heat dissipation keep the cool side where it needs to be. Two heating elements will be way to much direct heat. Save yourself some money and only use one heat source per enclosure and run one thermostat per tank. You'll be better off in the long run.

heck, if they are the same kind of setup, you only need one thermostat. Two is fine, but one is OKAY so long as you can measure out the temps properly.

When I got my first BP in March, I spent DAYS on this site reading every thread until I thought my head would explode. My hubby kept saying I was stressing out way too much. If my animals are fine, then I'm fine!

The only difference in my setups is that one is a 40 g and the other is a 20L. Yes...they are glass, but temps and humidity have been perfect thanks to all the helpful hints I've gotten here. I know 40 sounds too big, but Alice is 3ft long and 900 grams. The tank is filled with so much stuff it looks like a jungle in there. He LOVES it

Anyway...thanks for giving me some food for thought.

40 should be fine for a larger adult ball. I would get them each and thermometer, the Ranco's are fairly afordable for people needing to regulate just one or two animals. Check out Richs stuff at www.reptilebasics.com he's a great guy. I've bought many thermostats from him so check him out.

I agree, if you are using two different types of enclosures, then you will need two thermostats. I have never used Ranco's but do use Johnson Controls and a Herpstat. I like them both; although, I like the herptstat better, because it is proportional.

Are both of the tanks using the same size heating pad? If so then I think youd be alright using the same thermostat. Just test it out and check temps with an infared gun.

If the heating pads are different thats where i think youd run into problems...
