    Re: Pregnant asfs!( Pics)

well, I do know that my three male rats, which are housed together in a large 30g breeder tank, by wed or thursday, it smells close to what a barn/farm animal pen might smell like. Well, thats how my hubby describes it. As for the water, doesn't matter how much they do or dont drink, I change the water usually every other to two days. I think there shouild be a sticky listing the pros and cons of ASF's, Rats, and mice, as well as a comparison sticky of the differences between all three when it comes to breeding and such.

My experience with both species, ASF's drink the same amount of water as a domestic rat the same size. Same for food consumption and potency of smell as far as I can tell. (I still want to upchuck when I clean their tubs)

Let's stop the propagation of false rumors!!

Really? My rats drink a whole 16oz water bottle a day, twice as many asf's drink half of the small sized wate bottles. I'll give them both the same sized bottles and take pictures of how much they have drank in two days. Smell, cant even smell anything unless its cleaning day. Food, they do not eat as less as I thought but it still is not as much as rats. Are you sure yours are asfs Connie

Are you referring to a full grown rat?

I still stand by that ASF's eat and drink just as much as a domestic rat the same size.

I think ASF's smell bad. LOL I also know no one else in the world can smell them. I've come to terms with that.

ASF's definately drink and eat less then a same sized normal rat. The water use especialy is at least half as much.

If they ate and drank the same amount of food, how could they possibly take so much longer to grow? Do you think asf's just digest their food way faster?

Same potency of smell? I am starting to doubt that your ASF's are ASF's too!!!

    LOL!

Hey man, I'm just laying down what goes on in this house. However I think it as been well told by me that I think ASF's smell far worse than domestic rats.

Maybe it is just your overwhelming love of your normal rats... You love them so much that you don't even recognize the STINK!

I find the asf's have a unique smell, kinda like skunk.. but very weak. Some people probably smell it better than others.. Also they pee in a corner so the entire bedding is not urine soaked.

My regular rats overpower any smell that the asf's make I clean the regular rats more than twice as often as the asf's.

nice pics.. I haven't gotten any golfballs yet but I am getting close!!

    Re: Pregnant asfs!( Pics)

well, guess the only way I'm gonna find out is if I get some asf's. I already know that I am not breeding mice again, well not on purpose anyway, cause they really STINK!!!! Hubby tolerates the smell of the rat tank, so maybe asf's are the way to go. Hubby has a really sensitive nose to smells, so if the smell bothers him he's gonna pester me about it. Plus, having all the animals in the livingroom doesn't make it any easier either.

Ah Mike... Thanks, but that's not true. I can smell the soiled bedding from domestic rats when it's time to change, but I really find the smell of ASF's to be nauseating. That little corner that they pee in smells so terrible by the end of the week... Like something rotting...

I've never been known to have a sensitive nose, but I have had one person agree with me about the ASF's this past weekend. She doesn't live around any rodents, and she really did think the ASF tubs smelled worse than my domestic rats as she helped me move them around.

Maybe I just do a good job keeping the big rats smelling good.
