Sorry about your car! Mines had some problems over the past couple months, then a few days ago the a/c went out and down here in Texas that's a bad thing!

    Re: Dang, my car busted

Heck ya, such a bummer. I've been paying off money on the credit card for Tinley, and now this pops up! Total price is 749 or something around there, and it's fixed now so I can go get it after work.

My car has only had AC last summer when Chris filled it up for me. We tried it this year but the stupid thing wouldn't hook on, and the hose was too short... then I took the hose and gauge off... that is something you should never do I quickly found out.

    Re: Dang, my car busted

It sucks when unexpected car troubles tap into funds designated for other purposes.

Just be glad you are not building a performance engine. The estimate to build my Pontiac 455 is in the $9000.00 range.(I'm supplying the main block.) Then again you can't stick a price tag on an estimated by computer modeling 800 Ft lbs of torque and 750 Horse power while being naturally aspirated running on 93 Octane pump gas. Now all I have to do is sell my old house to get the money for this than raise up another $20K or so to do the rest of the cars frame off rodstoration.

no offense but you got ripped off big time i could change a fuel pump and filter for $50 it only takes about 15 minutes to do it im in the wrong hobby i need to start working on cars full time instead of as a hobby seriously i dont know what kind of car you have but im assuming its a newer car with fuel injection where the fuel pump is in the tank that takes 15 minutes to fix and is a $50 job and if the car is older where the fuel pump is on the side of the block it takes even less time that guys a crook pop the bottom of the rear seat out which just clips in remove 4 screws to the access panel pop the wires off which is a clip another clip holds the pump in the tank it takes 15 minutes i hate crooks

Thanks but he's not a crook, and while I value all opinions, calling someone I trust a crook was pretty rude.

Here, click that little link here... it shows my fuel pump, for $354. The filter was $15. That's $369 without tax. Plus $22 tax, we're up to $391.

I don't recall how much the tank was, but it was over $100.

I'm not a stranger to messing around with cars, but I am not an expert as you clearly are. My monte carlo is the absolute worst design, and I wouldn't be surprised if they put the fuel pump right in the middle of the engine block to save space.

I have no doubt he did the job in the hours it took him, so I have no problem paying him the $150 for it, he's one guy with a little shop and a full schedule all the time. He so kindly squeezed me in on short notice, and if he felt the need to charge me more for that convenience, so be it.

So all that was to say, chill out and don't call everyone a crook when you think you know better.

    Re: Dang, my car busted

The price that this mechanic charged is a fair charge, but......... if you know how to do any job yourself, the high cost that someone else pays can appear outlandish. Also..... When I pay my trusted local independant mechanic to do work for me I always reduce the cost of the job tremendously by doing a sometimes exhaustive but usually cursary on line search and buy the parts much cheaper than the mechanic gets them for. He then just charges me labor. A mechanic has his suppliers that he goes through and he pays what they charge for parts and then marks them up in price to you. He can't be expected to take a couple of hours searching for the lowest cost on parts for each job. But if you search yourself you will most often find the same part, often by the same maker varying in price IE: from $57 to $300 for the same part and many places ship free for orders over $50. My mechanic is happy because it saves him the trouble of running down the parts. Of course I always make sure that I order the correct parts and I get everything that he needs for a job. Anyway Connie, I don't think that this guy meant to offend either you or your mechanic, I think that he was just shocked at the cost because he could evision a different path to take.

I understand dale, and while you may have not seen it that way, I did. I took it offensively when he called him a crook then went on to say he hates crooks.

Crook implies that my mechanic was purposefully cheating me out of money... I beg to differ on that.
