Joined the BITE CLUB! (or...Side trip to Houston!)

While leaving San Antonio to head to Florida....I decided to make a little side stop in Houston to visit a dear friend we all know and love. Laura (Laooda) is SUCH a gracious hostess! She has a beautiful home with such an amazing menagerie of critters!! All of them exceptionally well cared for and very happy and healthy!

While there, I was looking through all her snake tubs. She's got some lovely little hatchlings that pipped recently and they were SO cute and feisty!

One little guy in particular.... When Laura handed him to me she warned me he was a little spit-fire.

And sure enough....while holding him in the palm of one hand...apparently I was "talking" with my other hand and it waved somewhere just a tad too close to his little face.....

Poor Laura was more traumatized by it than me...she felt so bad! But I was fine....in fact, I was kinda tickled by it because I'd finally gotten my first bite out of the way and I didn't even flinch. My biggest fear of getting bit, especially by a hatchling was that I would reflexively flinch too hard and drop or hurt the baby snake....but I didn't. I just told Laura, "Quick, go get the camera!" LOL

It really was a lovely visit and I'm SO glad we had the chance to do so. I'm bummed to have left Texas and left all my Texas friends behind for now....but I'm sure we'll be back there again someday.

Laura...thanks again, for opening your home to us! You have a beautiful family of furry, feathered and scaled critters! And Rob is a doll to have put up with all of us!

That's awesome! I'd love to run around Lauras house, I'm sure it was pretty awesome to visit with her.

Oh how wonderful you got to stop and visit with Laura! Nice little bite too LOL. Funny that I've only been bitten once by a decent sized snake in all the time we had our collection but these darn babies are regularily nipping at me. Silly little worms!

Oh yeah...I got bit on the palm of my hand by our beardie once, when he was littler. Left a nice little blood blister and hurt way worse than the snake bite. LOL

Yeah....HUGE teeth! Funny thing is, I felt every single little needle that pricked my skin....but only for the briefest insant. To say it "hurt" would be a pretty gross overstatement. LOL

Heres a random question: Lets say you have "a little spit-fire", how would you calm him down so he can be held?

LOL....well, for starters, don't wave your free hand anywhere near their faces.

Seriously, he was being held just fine in the palm of one hand. It was the movement of my other hand that set him off. But when they're really tiny like that, they're very defensive. In their world, every large heat signature is either a predador that wants to eat them, or a giant herbavore that might step on them. Such threats must be frightened off by displays of striking and hissing. Some babies are more serious about this than others.

Eventually, they'll grow out of it. In the meantime....don't make any sudden or quick movements with them. And accept the fact that you may get a little needle prick to the hand once in a while.
