What is a good tip for keeping red tails?

Ok, there is a possibility that i will be rescuing two female red tails from a woman in my town who cant care for them or the two other snakes and two lizards... im only interested in the boas...

she keeps them together, cause they always have been together... the largest is about 6 foot...

Uh, firstly, im going to separate them when i see their size, if the smaller one can live in a 40 gal for qt thats whats going to happen. uh, do yall have any good tips? i have read up on them before, but i was curious if you had any good ideas...

I suggest to feed them frozen thawed, because of the size of the prey that you will be feeding them. I suggest using tongs while feeding. They have a great feeding response.

They are fairly easy to take care of. Much like taking care of a ball python. They are much more inquisitive than a ball when handling though.

alright, dumb question but what is the best f/t food for a 6 foot red tail?

im guessing because of my rainbow eating med rats a red tail would that size shouldnt be to diff...

i feel so stupid hahha.
but i just wanna give these two girls a good rest of their lives lol

well... my 3-4 foot boas are currently on med. rats, and i'm about to bump them up, you have a 6 foot rainbow on mediums? Does that even leave a bump? Anyway off topic, medium should be fine because depending on their current state of health you don't want to feed them too large a meal.

My 5'3" boa eats large rats and is very close to going up to XL. You'd be fine getting a couple large ones and if they don't leave a lump, then step up to XL.

yeah, it does... they might be large, but they arnt the biggest ones you can get at the pet store, and its cheeper for me to get them there lol.

uh, ok, i'll prolly get a size smaller for them to start on... i dont wanna feed them to much to start judging from the pic on craigslist one of them is at a healthy weight... so we shall see... in 4 hours lol... i just dont wanna stress them to to much... any way...

Thats not a dumb question at all. The prey item should be about the same thickness as the thickest part of your boa. I feed my 6.5' female Jumbo rats, and my 4 - 4.5' male medium / large. I also started feeding them every two weeks, as opposed to every week since the items are much larger than what I feed my balls.

well, i figured, i have always wanted a red tail... and my mom found the add, talked to my dad and they agreed that i could get them... shes asking a small adoption fee and they come with their large tank...

a friend of mine told me i was backwards because i always get big adults (when it comes to the big snakes) and then babies.... lol...

I feed Jumbo rat every other week for my adult females. Sometimes a chicken if my breeder has some that hes giving away.

As far as tips go.......be cautious. These are extremely powerful snakes, and wont hesitate to show you that. But that being said, they also have some of THEE best personalities, I think, of any snake around.
