Cell Sorb Plus, no more rodent funk?
It's been about 9 months since I was shipped a sample bag of Cell Sorb Plus. I haven't really had an opportunity to use it, except with mice I would go out and buy, but then feed off a few hours later...they never really had an opportunity to stink up the place.
But with my 7 new hatchlings...I needed some hoppers. I decided to go out and buy a few weeks worth..14 hopper mice. I had a feeling I was going to be walking into my room a few days later with that terrible smell of mice... bleh..i hate it...
I got the mice, I got their set up going...and I put about a half inch layer of cell-sorb-plus mixed in with some pine shavings.
24 Hours later...No smell
48 Hours later...No smell (14 mice?)
72 Hours later.......No smell....
I'm on day 4 right now, about to be day 5 and I can shove my nose right down to where the mice are peeing and pooping all over the place and All I smell is the food I put in their bowl.
The only place I can keep live rats or mice is in my room...and one if the biggest reasons I haven't started breeding my own is because of the smell. I think these next few days may change my mind.
This is just me, in my little experiment....really little. 14 mice is probably nothing compared to what some of you guys have.
So, I recommend this bedding...100%. I hope that some of you guys out there with a much larger mouse/rat collection will try some of this stuff out and report back, letting us all know how it works for you...I'd really like to know how this stuff holds up with a large colony.

I've never seen it, but it's worth a try! Any idea on pricing?

If you really like the stuff and you need alot you can get a pallet of 40, 50lb bags for $16.00 a bag delivered to your door. I however do not have the room to store this much so I haven't ordered it.
I have seen a 20lb bag at pet smart and I think it was in the $18.00 range.

We use it for a couple of our pet rats that didn't seem to do too well on pine pellets. It works pretty good, but Equine Fresh seems to do just as good a job on the smell (with rats anyway) -- and at $6/bag for Equine Fresh or $15-20/bag for Cell Sorb, well it's just not cost effecient. You may want to give Equine Fresh a try, see if it reduces the smell enough in your room compared to Cell Sorb.

I've used Woody Pet which is similar to Equine Fresh. It was excellent. The store that carried it was so far away that I just never went and got more. I'll check to see if anywhere close carries Equine Fresh. Thanks!

I have not used cellsorb, but I have looked at it in the store and it seems very similar to Equine Fresh and Woody Pet and the other pelleted beddings. I believe cellsorb is made from something other than pine (Equine Fresh and Woody Pet are both pine), so that may affect its performance, but I have no idea if it would be better or worse than the pine ones.
I have used Equine Fresh, and it was great. I have read lots of people on this site and others talking about several different brands of these pelleted beddings, and they consistently get good reviews.

I thought some pines were also bad for rodents?

The cellsorb is made with recycled newspaper. I will admit, it does start to smell like wet soggy newspaper after a while. ick.
I love the Equine Fresh. It's much like woody pet, in that they remove most of the harmful chemicals and tars during the manufacturing process. My rats stopped sneezing as much after I took them off the aspen and put them on the equine fresh.
I would never use pine chips or shavings. Just like cedar, they are too aromatic and bad for rat lungs. The pine pellets are so much better.
I know there is even an aspen pellet, but it's horribly expensive. I found a local mill that sells 100% hardwood pellets, but they are out for the summer.
