Terra Cotta makes a great humidifier!
Just wanted to share my little discovery. Over the weekend I placed a couple of terra cotta saucers (about 3" dia) in one of my tanks with the idea of placing some sphagnum moss in them for extra humidity. First I washed them so they were still wet when I put them in. I never had a chance to put any moss in them because the humidity shot right up (too high in fact). So to make a long story short, damp terra cotta soaks up water very well and releases it slowly adding humidity. Has anyone else noticed this? Many people use terra cotta for hides so I imagine that it is safe to do this right?

Terra cotta (Italian: "baked earth") is a ceramic. Its uses include vessels, water & waste water pipes and surface embellishment in building construction. The term is also used to refer to items made out of this material and to its natural, brownish orange color.

Yeah, its just the orange clay pots that you would put a house plant in. Unglazed. Get them at walmart.

Yup, thats what I use for hides. Azalea pots. When I see a snake going blue, I soak the pot for a while, and we're good to go for a nice shed. Careful though, they tend to mold if you leave them wet too long.
