Who owns snake in the military?
Im leaving for the air force in august. I've already sold all my bps but still want some sort of snake. Im thinking a sand boa they are small and easy. The question i have is can i have one in the military? Who owns them, and does it work for you. I am single so ill be in the dorms. Maybe ill just have to wait awhile, which is fine i guess.

Re: Who owns snake in the military?
i hope this helps alittle. My dad is ex-military and now does plans and analyze for the military. he told me that they allow soliders to have pets. As long as they have a place to go when you get deployed. Also you must figure are you gonna live in a apartment or in the barracks. will you be able to care for the snake while having to do pt (psychial training) and still work? not to make a negative impact on you by choosing to own a snake or not.

If you're going to be living in barracks I highly doubt you'll get away with having a snake. Definitely hold off until you get somewhere permanent. If you're going in enlisted you'll have boot camp, then either out in the field or straight to school. Then you'll get your first PSC station, and then most likely more specialized schools. Also, since you'll be the FNG (F'ing New Guy) you'll probably spend a lot of time getting trained/qualified/working extra hours, etc.
Good luck. The Air Force was my second choice right after the Coast Guard...

Re: Who owns snake in the military?
I wasn't planning on buying any pets until im totally settled in. I was planning on volunteering at a humane society like i do in my home town. Maybe ill find someone trust worthy to take care of it there while i was deployed. I know i have to find someone to take care of it before i get it, im not that irresponsible to get a pet and possibly have nobody to take care of it when im away. I know i will be deployed eventually so that is another reason why i want to stick with a sand boa. They are small so they aren't as intimidating as say a red tail plus you kind of have to be a special kind of herper to screw up husbandry as simple as theirs is.
thanks so far
keep em coming

Re: Who owns snake in the military?
My husband is in the military... and there would be no way he could have a had snake in the barracks when he was living there... a definite NO NO. And during his course he had very little time...especially when they were cracking down on behavior and marks. I barely got to see him some weeks...let alone him being able to take care of our snakes. Obviously for us it works because he is in the military and I'm not .. so I can take care of them when hes gone.
But I would suggest waiting until you got more settled and are able to get your own place... which may be awhile...when on course you have to live on base unless your married lol.

I don't know about Air Force bases, but Army bases didn't allow any exotics; just dogs, cats, and fish. You weren't allowed to keep snakes, lizards, ferrets, hamsters, etc. During training, and in the barracks, no animals are allowed, other than service animals for MPs...basically they trained with German Shepherds.
