Re: What do you keep your BP Thermostat set at?
Mine is set at 96, that gives me a hot spot of 92.
And I have a heat taping running on the cool side, set at 85, that gives me a temp of 82.
Unless it is summer, then I just turn off the cool side, as I get ambient temps of 79-83 without any additional heat.

Re: What do you keep your BP Thermostat set at?
Ok, here's a question for the science nuts....
I have been trying to figure out how the temp gun works. I went to several pages and FAQ's. The best I can come up with is the actual title: "infrared laser".
So does this mean it's lasing in the infrared range? ie, spitting out a monochramitic beam of light that's so low energy we can't actually see it, in other words, infrared?
The reason I ask is because some have said it wouldn't be good to temp gun a snake, but I have seen people do this on many occasions. I believe in the Barker's book there is a picture of an intern doing exactly that. If it is lasing in the infrared range, then there would be no harm at pointing it at anything you want.
Anyone have any ideas??

I believe most temp guns are class 2 lasers; Class II lasers are not harmful to the skin but can cause harm to eyes if over exposure occurs.

I've been taking temps of my snakes for a while now and they're fine; I know of some other breeders who temp their snakes as well.

Those classifications for lasers seem to all include something about visible light. The PE1 tempgun, for example, emits no light unless I'm just not seeing it?

I'm not sure about the PE-1, its one of the only temp guns I've seen without a laser aiming system. I don't believe the laser is what does the temp reading; it just helps with aiming to get an accurate reading. Some of the more advanced temp guns use multiple lasers to aid in getting the best reading. I'm no temp gun wizard though; just what I've read here and there.

As long as I don't give my snakes cancer, I'm happy

I set mine to 95. The probe is directly on the heat tape.
as for IR Laser thermometers, the Laser is for aiming and the temperature is picked up with a IR sensor. so if your worried about that laser blasting through your snake you can always tape over it. I use an industrial temp gun that you can shut off the laser.
