Well, we don't really. Even though it was foolish behavior, it was an accident. The passenger was permanently injured not killed. This kid is only 17 years old. I joined the Army in 1969 in very turbulent times at his age and did plenty of reckless stuff (much more than this kid) and I realize just how young age 17 is. I fail to understand the jubilation being shown at this tragedy by so many. Is it simply that he was born into money that causes this reaction?

I can't comment for other people, but personally, no, that isn't why I'm gratified to know of this conviction. I am spurned to this feeling by the fact that he [Nick Bollea] is 17 and in the past year alone he received 4 tickets for speeding, not including several separate citations. Quite the record for somebody who just got his license less than a year and a half ago! Some of those include;

Nick was nailed last September driving 105 mph in a 70 mph zone in Collier County in nearby Naples; in February, he was ticketed for driving 57 mph in a 30 mph in Dade County; then in April, he was busted for driving 106 mph in a 70 mph zone in Osceola County. Source

Money buys many things, but what it can never buy is common sense. Either you have it or you don't. Hogan's kid does not. Despite several run-ins with the law he continued his reckless and dangerous actions, placing innocent pedestrians in harms way, and ultimately resulting in the life-long disabling of a friend; 22-year-old active-duty Marine (and Iraq war vet) John J. Graziano.

17 is young, yes, but the law says that it is old enough to assume the responsibility of car ownership and driving privileges. When individuals abuse those privileges and prove that they are not component to continue possessing them, I don’t really care how old they are. Nick Bollea had several serious warnings to change his ways prior to this incident. Despite this fact, he made the choice to again drive dangerously, and through that choice a friend has been disabled for life.

Nick Bollea is a person who was not going to stop until somebody was either paralyzed or killed. Sadly, that event has come to pass, and he is now reaping the consequences. I am not ‘happy’ about any of this, but it is good to know that Justice still works on some level.

Nightlad- I wasn't aware of his prior driving history. And 8 months in jail isn't a harsh sentence considering the facts. I just see this as a sad event all the way around that can't be corrected by jail time. As the car was owned by Hulk Hogan, I feel sure that a civil suit will follow that will help the victim financially. The adult that knew that he had a son that was an immature irresponsible minor should have not turned him loose in a fast car.

well now wait a sec, I personally am not a parent (choice) but many of my friends are. The outlook they have towards their kids is something like this " I want them to have a better life than what I had" This sentence could mean different things-" I want my kids to have more/nicer stuff..." " I want my kids to have better morals...",etc,etc. Regardless which iteration you choose, I'm sure the hulk is the same type of guy. He helped pioneer a body crushing display of brute force that hurt himself many times(remember andre the giant? The hulk tore a Lat in that match), and is now willing to give his kids all of this that he suffered for.
I have no problem with them being wealthy, in my eyes the hulk earned it. The kids, however...may have inadvertently been a *little* pampered because the hulks beginnings were so humble and he wanted his kids to have a better life...can't blame him can you? I'm sure that Hogan is going to attempt to help the family out of the injured victim, I feel he's a genuinely nice guy.I just hope the hulk realizes now that nick shouldn't be driving a heavily modded supra ( was it a supra? I think that it what was pictured). I feel a lightly modded Vespa would be a good daily from here on out for Nick.

I don't blame the hulkster at all. But if you do have children you are legally responsible for them until they reach adulthood. This boy is only 17 and Hulk Hogan is without any doubt on the hook for this (he owned the car as well) and will bear the full civil responsibility for this. I don't think that a jail sentence will accomplish anything here. He will only be exposed to things that are apt to make him worse than he was when he went in. He could be sentenced to long term (several years) community service working with accident victims. That would both benefit people and cause him to see first hand the horrible consequences that needless recklessness can bring. Jail time will not cause a 17 year old to become mature or responsible. An accident is not the same as intentionally hurting someone.

I understand your point completely... and agree with the fact that the open road isn't the place to be racing. In AutoX however, it's very well supervised in a super controlled environment and I highly doubt anyone has ever been hit by a car that was racing. I do have a friend that wrecked his mom's S2000 while racing in AutoX, but he didn't hit anyone... He just through the car into a big ditch.

Oh, in a controlled environment, I have no problem with racing at all It is an awesome hobby and fun to watch in the right place. I just dislike it when people use open roads for it that others could be travelling on unawares. But no I am not against racing in general!

True, 8 months behind bars compared to a lifetime in a chair or afflicted with another disability does not seem quite just. The news reports are vague about how exactly his friend was injured. Considering his past driving history, I'm surprised at how light the sentence was. It was not as if the possibility of this happening was completely unforeseen by any party.

But the judgment has been passed, and it can only be hoped that others will learn from it. And Nick himself, of course.

There is a civil suit pending. I am interested in the outcome.

I have had the good fortune to deal with several self-made millionaires in my business dealings. It seems the tendency is to go a bit overboard if you had nothing growing up.

The first gentleman I got to know bought his kids anything they wanted- he'd get them Ferraris, Lamborghinis, whatever they wanted. They would wreck the cars in short order, then he'd buy more.

Personally, I'm glad he's doing some time. I know reality TV is 90% editing, but he seemed like a little pr*** on the show. I saw a bit of testimony and the injured marine's family said he has never even apologized to them. He needs to see that his actions really do have consequences.
