You don't have to buy one, but they do rent them.

Not everyone has the skill to run even a table saw. And most certainly not everyone has the space available to do so.

In the OP's case, it sounds more like a problem with an individual than an entire corporation. At the same time they had a jerk who wouldn't do his job...there was also a very nice guy who did it very well and offered to continue doing it even if policy changed. So which one do you choose to reflect how well all of Home Depot is doing its job??? Often, it boils down to specific store management. Some are definitely better than others...whether Home Depot or Lowes.
Perhaps i misunderstood the OP. It was my impression that they were upset because the store was not willing to make ALL of the cuts for free. Did I misunderstand?

Bottom line is that the store offers the 2 cuts as a courtesy. The reason it was offered in the first place was so that the product could be cut into a size that can be transported by the customers vehicle, Not to make lots of perfect cuts for a project.

You say it is good customer service for the guy to stop everything he is doing, and make lots of spot on cuts for one customer... but what about the 5 customers that can't find help while he is making all those cuts... The ones looking for a manager so they can complain that nobody is helping them.

Sure, they should hire more people... but then the prices would go up, and most would pick another store for the price. This is a problem that our society created. Think of a solution, don't condem the guy stuck in the middle 40 hours a week.

Think about the other side. That is all I am saying.

Disclaimer: no, I do not work for home depot, nor do i work for any other retail store. Yes, I shop at @$#&mart. For the price, not the service.

I worked at Home Depot for a little over 2 years. I hated it. I stoped working there last Oct. Here in NY the first 2 cuts were free and $50 cents a cut after that. I dought they changed there policy because Home Depot was all about kissing the customers A$$ and screw the employee. I worked in lumber and if we didn't feel like cutting we would put an "out of order sign" on the saw and turn the breaker off.

Yup, I think you did misunderstand me. I was more than willing to pay 25 cents for each additional cut, was not complaining at all about that.

Also if they don't want to make many cuts then they could add a limit to the amount of cuts they can make per person. But the sign read "first 2 cuts are free, .25 for each additional cuts." it says no where about a limit.

And the nice man who cut our wood excused himself several times to help other customers. I didn't mind at all, I realize Im not the only one in the store, which is also why I waited close to an hour for someone else to show up that day.

As long as he was trying to do his best with the cuts and he was friendly, he could have literally taken all day. Just greet me with a smile and or friendly attitude and I'm happy.

    Re: home depot?

Sorry but I don't buy the "don't feel like it" thing. You're paid to do a job and if that job includes cutting lumber, then you should be cutting lumber. You aren't paid quite honestly to like every aspect of a job, that's just not realistic in almost any employment situation.

We just bought a lot of melamine for two racks yesterday at Home Depot. Each piece required 1 cut. The only thing we were advised was that we would of course have to buy both pieces which was fine with us. I'll have to check the bill to find out what the cut charges were but whatever they were, they were worth it to avoid the hassle of cutting melamine at home.

As far as this very rude Home Depot employee, why feel bad for him? There's a lot of good people that want jobs, if he doesn't want his then that's on him, not you. I'd put what occurred in detail in writing to the store manager with a copy to their corporate office. You do not deserve to be treated like that, you were paying for an offered and posted service and you shouldn't put up with that kind of rude, low level service. It is not your fault that an employee of Home Depot doesn't like certain aspects of his job. If he's not happy he needs to address that to his boss, not take out his bad attitude on a paying customer.
