    Gerbil Housing

Has anybody has success housing gerbils in a rack system? Currently mine are in a 10 gallon aquarium, but that won't last for long considering there's 8 total in there now

I don't really want to get into tons of aquariums everywhere, as they are harder to move, clean, break easier, etc, but I'm not sure about housing them in anything plastic the way they chew.

I keep all gerbils in glass tanks, they are digging & chewing fiends and to me plastic is a bad idea. Rats, mice and ASF's go in plastic tubs and racks.

i would pick up a few more plain 10 gallon glass tanks. the tanks shouldn't be more then 10 bucks each, and the tops are also 10 bucks. lid clips are 2 bucks.

I do not recoment the critter keeper tanks. they cost much more, and in time the tops do go bad.... plus you will sooner or later crack one. Much nicer to only have to go out and buy another 10 dollar tank and use the old top then it is to have to go out and spend another 35 bucks on another critter keeper.

For me, this was an EXPENSIVE lesson learned!

Do you have anymore trouble than usual with them chewing? I've tried critter cages before and they always seem to find a way to chew out.

kitty litter tubs in wooden racks...they chew on the water valves but not as bad as the rats...you need tubs that are smooth no edges to chew...follow the RDR link on page one and find his youtube rat rack vids...my racks are the same as his...
1 male to 4 or 5 females...never mix adult gerbs...all baby's go into a community tub to mix blood lines...a large cement tub in a different rack...

Do you get litters from more than 1 female at a time?
I have always done 1.1 with gerbils. Anytime I tried more females only 1 of the females would actually produce.
