I'm thinking of getting a corn, a question?

We have two corns in the house.. one is the sweetest gentlest snake we have (my mom's snake) and the other is satan spawn (chased me across the herp room trying to eat my bare feet)

To be fair.. my mom's snake we've had since she was a tiny baby and she's handled regularly.. the other one I adopted as an adult and it was not handled much at all by the previous owner.

In general, corns are known for being docile.. babies are very slithery though.. my mom's snake is a pretty good lap snake.

I haven't dealt with corns for quite awhile, I'm not a big colubrid fan, but Melanie's cornsnake is pretty calm compared to others I've held. Just like us, I think every species of snake can have its unique personality.

That's my orangey boy, full of orangey goodness! He's really come into his own and has such a great personality, always keeping an eye on me when I'm working with the other snakes. Cuz you *NEVER* know when a f/t mouse is gonna drop from the sky! BE ALERT!

Hehehehe... Oh I believe it. I've had TWO adult females so far that have been the same way: always ready to strike as soon as that lid opened. This last one, that CandyCane, I returned to the breeder I got her from because she was just so evil... and then when he reaches in for her she's a little lamb! So apparently she just hated ME, and now I've probably lost the ability to deal with that breeder cause he thinks I was lying to him about how mean she was!

Anyway... yes, corns all have distinct personalities. Even more so than BPs it seems. After my two bad adult female experiences, I think I'll just stick with my little 7month old Anery and make my other female a yearling at most. That way I can have some control over how used to handling they are.

I have two corn snakes. My first was purchased as a tiny teeny little worm of a thing. She's about two feet long now. She inspired me to purchase another adult male sun-glow.

I have noticed that corns, more so than bp's, tend to show a preference for certain humans. I don't know if it has to do with scents, or styles of handling, or what.

My adult male bit the girl I bought her from when she was taking him from his enclosure. But this snake is very happy to be held by me. I also notice that the more I try to contain him the more he struggles. As soon as I release my grip he calms down. Both of my corns have fallen asleep in my hands! Don't get me wrong they are quite fast, and very strong snakes, but can also be surprisingly friendly.

I love them and plan on getting at least one more!

You might also want to consider some of the milksnakes. Like corns they tend to be very easy keepers other than being smaller snakes their ability to escape any give in their lid is something to be very aware of. Some of the milks though do get a good size. An adult Black Milksnake for instance is a gorgeous good sized snake but nothing like a mature boa would be (and they turn from tri-color babies into all black adults...how cool is that!)

My 14 year old has an Albino Nelson's Milksnake and everything we've read say they tend to be one of the nicest of the milksnake group as far as temperment. The albino's are truly gorgeous - basically they look like someone drew on them with highlighter pens and almost look like a fake snake LOL. The one we have hasn't hissed or musked since she was a tiny noodle and has never tried to bite. That doesn't say it could never happen, but basically she's pretty laid back for a colubrid. She is a busy thing when she's out and requires constant hands on holding but she's not spazzy or anything...just nosey about everything!

I find my corn to be a bit on the slithery side. If I can get her to wrap around a finger, that seems to keep her calm.
