Well if you're using a glass tank with this type of thing you could always just place a square of black construction paper on the outside of the tank at the viewing area. Then when you want a peek, lift the paper.

My only concern, not knowing this particular product, is will it be easy to clean. Snakes can really make a mess of their hides using them as a toilet. Having to chip a stuck urate or scrub baby snake poo off a hide made me quickly want something very easy to soak and scrub.
