Re: Mega-ray
Don't measure if the UTH is working based on how cool or warm your snakes feels. He may be in the middle of thermoregulating, your temperature is much higher than his, so its not a reliable way to measure if it's hot enough.
A good UTH will keep a steady temperature when used in conjunction with a thermostat to control it.
Set the thermostat for the UTH to 92 degrees on his hot spot. Under the tub it will be much warmer, but we want his hot spot to be inbetween 90-94.
For the ambient (air) temps in the rest of the tub, his cool side should best be around 80-84.
If your still having troubles, try and give us dimensions of everything your using, and even better a picture. A tub should not be hard to heat up.

By lamp I meant the UVB light you said you are using. If you are keeping your bp in a plastic tub, I'm curious to know how exactly you have the light set up. As far as the heating pad goes, what brand is it? Also, what exactly are you using to measure the temperature in the tub?

I don't have a light. I was just asking about a certain light to see if it was a good one. I'm using a UTH. I'm measuring temps with an Acu-rite thermometer/humidity sensor. Probably the exact same one mentioned in that FAQ.

The tub is 22"L x 16"W x 11"H

Yes it's a human pad. Once again I was told "That'll work fine" but of course it isn't and I want to make absolutely sure I've got a good system this time. And yes that does help. Specifically listing belly temp helps a lot. I was freaking out about getting the ambient temps to 90 degrees.

Get rid of the Human heat pad. If you want to use a UTH get a UTH they are designed for that exact purpose. A human heating pad was not designed for that use, they are very unreliable and I would also think it would be a very inconsistant heat source. You can pick up a decent UTH at any Petco or PetSmart. Also I would not suggest replacing the plastic top with mesh or screen. It will probably give you humidity issues. Allowing most of the humidity to escape. That also depends on your environment. If you live in a very humid area that may not be a problem but if you live in a very dry area this could be an issue. Screen or mesh would also make it hard to maintain a consistant temp. Just my 2 cents
