New rescues with problems :(

I thought the Seven Dust was not recommended. Am I misunderstanding something here? When we got our BP, the bottom of the tank was very lightly dusted with the seven dust and then the substrate over that. I thought I read that the seven dust can cause neurological problems so I replaced everything in my tank right away and have not used it since.

When the store set up our tank, they used maybe a tablespoon or so to dust the bottom of a 20L tank. Is this safe or not?

I personally wouldn't use it - because it's not designed to be used for reptiles. Beardeddragon would need to comment on why he chose to use it.

You are correct about the potential side-effects of sevin dust. It's really strong, very old-school stuff. When combined with moisture, it absorbs more readily through the skin. I saw a dog who was dusted with it while still wet from a bath...the dog presented to the ER actively seizing and did not respond to treatment. Due to financial constraints, the owners elected to euthanize.

Provent-a-mite or Frontline spray (not drops) are both much safer treatments. I personally have used Frontline as recommended by my friend who is the herp-keeper at the zoo here in town. I misted it lightly on the bedding and allowed it to dry completely before placing the snake on it. I also sprayed it on a paper towel, and while still damp, wiped the lower third of the snake's body with it. One treatment was sufficient, and no mites were visible after 12 hours. As a barrier, I sprayed it in a zone around the rack where the snake was being quarantined as well.

If i had pam here right now i wouldnt use it, i lightly dusted their bodys and let it sit for three hours, wiped it off and and then rinsed, and then gave them a bath. Just in the tub there was alot of them plus what we think were eggs, so its working, and any we find on their bodys afterwards have been dead. After that we dust their newspaper with it.

By dusting their bodies with it, aren't you taking an even bigger chance of neruological problems? I understand you need to treat the mites but is it worth the risk? I'm not slamming you, I'm just trying to figure this seven-dust stuff out. I have a bag full of the stuff and refuse to use it based on what I've read. If anybody wants it, they can have it.

Sevens dust is more for a larger area, than a tub. Its for livestock, and dogs, I would be very carefull of using it on dogs even, let alone snakes. I would LIGHTLY dust the bottom of the tub then put aspen over it. Not on the animal. It does kill pests well though! Good luck with them.

There is a sevin five and a sevin ten, no way would i use the sevin ten, its so much more powerful.

Also, if you have mites im not sure that its a good idea to put aspen down as the substrate when your working with mites.

Glad to see the snakes you rescued are better! i recently purchased my first ball python and after i got it home i realized it has mites. And the PAM is working great!
