    Re: Prepare for cuteness!

Female sugar gliders are able to conceive young at about 7 to 10 months. After about 16 days in the mother, the baby is born, with a weight of only 0.2 grams. It must then find its way to the mother's pouch where it will finish its development attached to one of four nipples for approximately 70 days. Eighty one percent of all litters will consist of two joeys. Joeys are weaned 110 to 120 days after emerging from the pouch, which is about 16 to 17 weeks (Kahn, 1656).

Here is a good site for some info.
    http://www.sugarglider.com/gliderpedia/index.asp?Food
I started with a trio back in 1998 and had a great time with them and built them a large enclosure, they loved it. Just make sure whatever cage you get for them is something you can wash down well with soap and water because the male will spray his scent around and it can get strong. They have come along way on pelleted foods for them. Which I think are great products. Good luck and wait until the baby comes out they are a lot of fun. Just think next time she will have 2 babies.

Thanks for the link, I've had the sugar gliders for 8 months so they have a cage and excellent food.. The only thing I didn't know much about with them was their young.. They're in a 4 foot tall by 2 foot wide cage (which is the largest I could find, and is larger than the 24x24x24 min. cage size).. and only eat pelleted food from Exotic Nutrition Co. which costs me tons of money but its the best food I could find for them (they're also on 2 different supplements form ENC and eat fresh fruits and veggies as treats). I wipe down their cage 2xs a month... and take it outside for a full cleaning 2xs a month.. but I haven't cleaned it as often recently because I read that changing the smell of the cage could stress the mother out and she could eat the joey.

And she won't be having any more babies.. I am keeping the family together (I don't want the baby alone and I can't sell it because I wouldn't trust anyone to take care of it) so after the joey is out of pouch I'm going to go get the male neutered because I read that he could have sex with the joey if its a female.. and if the joey is male I'll also have it neutered so it can not have sex with the mother.

These sugar gliders were bought from a pet store that didn't take the best care of them so they're tame, but are still a little shy when it comes to people.. They both will come out and sit on my lap when I feed them fruit at night, but thats it. I had bought a tent to bond with them in (which actually worked really well) but about a week after that I noticed the female had a joey, and again I read that hanging out with her too much could stress her out (because she wasn't comfortable with people yet) so after the joey is out of pouch I'm going to put together a larger play tent for the 3 of them and try again to get them more comfortable with me so they can spend more time out of the cage.

Let me know if it sounds like somethings wrong with any of that.. I've only had them for 8 months so I'm sure I could have missed something.

Thanks again for the link, I hadn't seen that site. I read everything else I could find on the internet though, I'll go through and read that site later tonight, see if I missed something.. and its never bad to keep reading about them, I learn something new about them all the time.

    Re: Prepare for cuteness!

The tent is a great idea. Mine were a wild bunch! You could also try using a bonding pouch and take them places with you while they sleep. Also I use to have a blast making no sew stuff for them... Here's a link in case you don't know what I'm talking about!
