Some ball pythons are champs about eating F/T prey items right off the floor of their enclosures. It's such a fantastic thing!
Other ball pythons will take P/K or F/T prey, but seem to do a better job of taking off of tongs with the keeper playing a slight game of "tug-o-war" for stimuli. Now I'm not talking about ripping the rodent back out of the snake's mouth, but some snakes need that wiggly motion to get them to really commit to constricting & eating a F/T or P/K prey item.
They're as individual as we are, folks! Just way less complicated.
For mine, I always have to do the tongs dance for him to strike and eat. If I leave it on the floor or hang it in front of him he won't budge. After striking ne always constricts, but seems to know that the mouse is already dead, hence only stays in the choking position for 10-20 seconds.
Once my spider male locks on to the scent of food he grabs it and kills it.I fail to tell him its a frozen thawed .I think each snake does thier own kill tactics lol
When feeding mine f/t, I hang the mouse in by the tongs and she'll strike and coil almost immediately. She only stays coiled for about 20-30 seconds before adjusting to swallow. When I've fed live, she strikes and coils in seconds, and stays coiled for about 1-2 minutes before adjusting... I think they can tell when the prey is dead and when it's safe to relax and enjoy...
