    Have you looked in the yellow pages for mom and pop type pet stores?

    Additionally, since Petco has their name on a Major League Baseball stadium (San Diego Padres), I doubt they're going out of business.

    They just built a brand-new PetCo near my college. Maybe they're building new stores and closing down their less profitable ones?

    There's a PetCo in the town NERD is in--I don't know how they thought they could compete with our Kara Maybe that one's closing!

    I have not heard of this. Sadly, the Petco closest to me, in Buffalo, is better in conditions than most of the smaller stores (not all.)
