so how much does it cost to have a domain?

Domains are cheap - $9 a year or so (the domain is just the www.yoursitename.com thing)

Hosting (where the physical website sits) is $60 a year (from TekWarren)

Actual Site - this depends if you build it yourself then free if you want someone else to do it...$100 - $1,000's+. It all depends on what you want, how much flash and other fancy stuff you want.

This is totally up to you...not a requirement in the slightest. I should get Nate to make up one of those sig pic things for my hosting services though...*hint* *hint* But he's pretty busy (which is a good thing).
