First: you could simply remove the plywood on the sides and have a fan blow on it to allow air flow across the tops of the tubs. Problem solved.

Second (in addation to the first or stand alone): cutting out the sides of the tubs and pop riveting hardware cloth in its place to allow air flow.

    thanks Ed.

I have a fan that is constantly running at low speed for them...you can't see it because I moved it to take pics.

I also have a ceiling fan in that room.

And we drilled holes in the tubs to help with ventilation.

The quality of your work looks good.I have always admired people that have good carpentry skills (something that I lack). You will save a bundle by making your own rack and producing your own rats. If you have a big surplus to sell you might even have a free feeder supply!

    Re: Check out Meme's RACK!

the rack looks nice, but aside from the ventillation issues that have already been mentioned those tubs are really small. something about the size of a 10 gallon tank is really the smallest you want to go for either a pair or for one mom with babies. they do need a little room to move around and get away from each other. plus, once you have a mom with 12+ babies that are close to weanling size they will be stacked on top of eachother in one of those tubs and the amount of urine will be a lot more than something that size can handle.

maybe you could re-work the rack for 10 gallon tanks? i'm not sure that there are any tubs that would fit in that depth of a rack and still be big enough.

***I also have other BIG rat bins that I use for my breeders...I move them in that when they are about to pop and just relocate them as they ween.

I should have said that in my previous posts.

nice rack!!! and i looooove your rat homes as well.

i'm wondering, for myself here... if i could make a rack like this but with the longer bins like we use for the snake racks? creating the ventilation using the mesh on the top and hanging the bins above... we really need to figure something out to feed our snakes, lower the mess made by our ratties and decrease the smell as well. i think you've assisted me to find a solution. thanks woman! (and nice rack if you don't mind me saying so again!)
