    Snake weights

I hadn’t weighed my snakes in years, I never really saw the need, but since I’ve got a new bathroom scale I decided to weigh all my critters, except for my new young boa. All of my adult snakes are on a very similar feeding cycle, but the scrub and olive do get a little more food. I was surprised at how close they all are in size.

Nigel- 2016 male olive python: 16.8 lbs/7.6 kg
Klauss- 2017 male scrub python: 16.2 lbs/7.3 kg
Shredder- 2015 male jungle carpet python: 11.5 lbs/5.2 kg
Monty- 2017 male Motley BCI: 11.5 lbs/5.2 kg
Chomper- 2014 male caramel coastal python: 10.6 lbs/4.8 kg
    7: 2015 male Bredls python: 4.7 lbs/2.1 kg (he’s a mouser)

Insights like that one is why it's a good idea to weigh your snakes. I say, "Track your snakes length, weight, feeding, sheds, activity, bowel movements ... whatever!" Go crazy. You'll be surprised at what you'll learn.

I usually only record their feedings and sheds. This is the first time I’ve weighed them in years. I’ll probably do it once a quarter now just to see the differences. How do you get an accurate measurement of their length? That seems challenging. 😀

For me? Not so much. I have one small snake. For you, it's going to be more challenging. But, I'll tell you what I do and you can decide for yourself whether it's worth the hassle.

I use a snake measuring app. A simple Google search will give you a selection of them. I started off using the serpwidgets online tool, but that's been taken down. Now, I use this one: https://snake-measure-tool.software.....com/download/. I like it because it works the same as serpwidgets.

You need to upload a picture to the app that shows your snake's full length next to something of a known length, like a ruler. You tell the app the length of the ruler and the app extrapolates the length of your snake. In the example below, if the lower blue line is 10 inches, then the line tracing my snake is 39.6 inches. In theory, it should be pretty accurate. I'm not 100% convinced myself. I'll need to work with it more.

Because your snakes are much larger, I suspect it will be a challenge to get the whole snake and ruler in the same picture. This app is also very sensitive to perspective. If the ruler is even a little closer to the camera than the snake is, it will throw off the measurement by a lot. It's best to take the picture from directly above as in the example. You'll probably need a ladder. If you decide to try it, good luck. If you succeed, I'd love to see it.
