What a cool find...I'm glad that at least you managed to protect them, but as already said, I'd probably release them too. You could try newborn "premie" mice if you can
find them...but I'm a mouse breeder & I don't even get many of those very often. When I do, I freeze them- never know when they come in handy, as they did when I
took in a wild-caught hatchling Western longnose snake years ago. They're small snakes with similar eating habits, & that snake lapped them pinkies up like crazy, lol.
Those scarlets are so pretty, but if you love the look, just get a c/b Sinaloan milk snake...you'll be able to feed it, at least.
