Are you having problems with the phone app? I checked the reviews and seems that lately people are having problems were the sensor doesn't send information to their phones and they need to keep downloading the app. It seems all the bad reviews I saw are from recent months. I use a SensorPush in all my enclosures. I screw it 3” up the wall so it doesnt get pissed on.. thats sends Ambient and Humidity to my Phone screen. Then when ever I need to dial a enclosure in I just set it in the area and leave it for 4 hours monitoring the temp... works like a charm. They are $50 and like I said I have one in every enclosure. I love them.
As far as a Laser, I just use a cheap Lowes one to check a Snakes Body Temp, like you say ive had problems with them for surfaces because ive learned Substrates differ a reading. My Butcher Paper gets false readings in particular. What a surface is made of differs what kind of heat it absorbs and messes up the laser reading.
