Re: Rescue BP- air pockets under skin

I believe this is the thread Bogertophis was thinking of. It is at least the most recent and detailed post of a similar sounding problem snake.

If nothing else, this might give you an idea if what you're in for working with this snake. I haven't re-read in a while, but it was a very long and rough process.

This sure looks and sounds an awful lot like a snake I just saw listed for sale locally... Hopefully things have gotten better and hopefully husbandry is spot on to give that little snake a shot.

Yup, you beat me to it. What you're up against in a starved snake is that the skin gets very weak, because the body prioritizes internal organs over skin when food
is lacking & the skin may never fully improve: it tears very easily. Those fluid pockets may appear normal but then tear open & need long-term care before slowly
improving. (prescription Silvadene cream is best on the open wounds) It's possible to keep this snake going, but euthanizing might be kinder? It's hard to say.

I'll see how she's doing if she gets sent back from the vet. If not then hopefully they at least have the decency to euthanize rather than letting her wait it out. If she's in worse shape when she gets back I'll find a herp vet or talk to a coworker about our possible policies on euthanization. Poor baby, I really want her to live a good long life but sometimes you gotta think about what's better for the suffering animal, especially since it sounds like she may have long term complications. For now I'm waiting with my freezer stocked and her tub still warm. Definitely gonna see if I can check in with the vet at all or have a manager do so, but sometimes vet visits can be pretty long. Fingers crossed for her.

I don't like to quit on a snake either, but sometimes it's for the best...I won't criticize whatever you decide...she's in pretty bad shape. Yes, fingers crossed anyway.

Am I reading you right, that she's only seeing a regular (not a herp) vet? Yikes...this is way out of their league, if so. To put it in human terms, she belongs in ICU.

No! She's at the store's herp vet currently. I meant that if she makes it back in worse shape or not looking any better (not sure if our vet is the same one that sent her back in her initial condition to the other store) I'd take her to another one that my friend who also owns BPs highly reccomended. Sorry to worry you, I did phrase that oddly.

Quick update for anyone concerned. She's doing okay it seems, the vet aspirated a bit of the fluid and checked it out. Looks like there's no bacteria in there at all, there's just a little bit of blood. Currently they're thinking its either from an old burn or an old wound, but they're not super sure. Otherwise she's in fairly stable condition, definitely hoping she'll make it through this okay. Knowing that the fluid is bacteria free is a weight off my chest in and of itself.

Thank you for the update and I'm so happy to know things are looking up for her.
