Quick question about heat pad with thermostat probe

I know everyone says you got to sandwich the probe inbetween the plastic and the heat pad. But i find that bubble to be very annoying and it makes some of the pad not even touch the plastic. So if i were to tape the probe to the buttom underneath the heat pad instead of the adhesive side for say. So i could eliminate that bubble but probe still be on heat pad. would it do the same thing?. Or does it absolutely need to be sandwiched?

Mine is placed on the outside of the heat mat, because I forgot to put it in between when I put the heat mat on. No issues at all.
