    Is a thermometer necessary?

Before I start, I've already bought a temp gun to keep on eye on the tep of the hotside for when I get my boy (a male piebald in October). I was wondering if I need a thermostat for each side? For my tarantulas I have a hand sized quality thermometer/hydrometer meant for a whole room to just keep track of there enclosures. I set it inside for about 30min or until it holds at a certain temp. Was wondering if that would be good or if I should get thermostats and a hydrometer for inside the tank, and if so which brands are accurate? I have one but it is off by almost 10 degrees.

I think you might be confused about something- a thermometer and a thermostat are different things.

You 100% need a thermoSTAT to plug your heat sources into, and to control it to a desired temperature. The best brand is Herpstat, which is totally worth it and is reliable for years. But if you are on a budget, get the Jumpstart thermostat on amazon.

A thermometer is just something that takes the temperature. Most people use digital Acurite thermometers. A temp gun also just takes the temperature.

Depending on what type of enclosure you have depends on where you need a thermoSTAT. You will need a thermoSTAT to regulate ALL of your heat sources. You only need one uth (regulated with a thermoSTAT)on your snakes hot side and not on the cool side. You need a thermoMETER to see what the ambient air temp is (80) and humidity levels (60). Both are required and not an option along with your temp gun.

Sorry, that was a typo. I do have a thermostat, the Jump Start, just got the words mixed up when making the post lol

I'll go ahead and get some digital thermometers, just wanted to make sure before I did in case the temp gun alone was enough. Thank you

Sorry, it was just a typo. Was late and didn't double check before I made the post. I already got the thermostat, knew I needed that from the getgo. Was just curious about the thermometers. I've bought those cheap ones before that are never accurate, so I was curious if just the temp gun would work, or the digital thermometer I use in the room (about the size of my hand, I set it in my tarantulas enclosures here and there to check the temp/humidity). But I'm gonna go ahead and get some good digital thermometers

Again, sorry about the mix up with the two words.

    Re: Is a thermometer necessary?

Before I start, this is my opinion only and what has worked for me.

Depends on what enclosure you are using ,what room it is in and if the temperature fluctuates a lot where you live.
I have mine in tub and switched out to racks which isn’t really different. When I first got the snake, I had digital accurite thermometer/hygrometer in the tub and also thermometer with probe to be extra careful. However, what I noticed was that the temp in the room and in the enclosure had no difference, maybe +- 0.5. So what I did was just set the accurite thermometer outside of the enclosure because snakes were pushing it all over. I worked with hot spot for almost two weeks to make sure it is constant with my thermostat. Every now and then, I check with temp gun and it stays the same. So in short, I have thermometer at the top of the rack to just measure ambient and for hot side thermostat acts as thermometer. If you want to be careful, I would say have thermometer inside but for me, I know that it will be constant unless something happens. Also, I check with temp gun time to time.

    Re: Is a thermometer necessary?

The room itself never gets lower than 75 degrees since we have other critters in the "critter room" that need it to be a bit warm. Seems like opinions are split on thermometers from what I've seen. Watched videos where the snakes were kept without them, with them, and obviously the replies I've gotten say get them. Just to play it safe, I'm gonna go ahead and get some digital ones.

And 75 is too low for bp's. So if your room sits at 75 or below you need heat sources.

Gotcha have the heat mat and thermostat for the hot side, already tested them to make sure they work. Also got a small heat light just in case the cool side is too cold. I'm setting everything up this week (not getting him until the 6th) so that I can make adjustments if I need to, such as putting the heat light farther or closer if need be
