The Cheapest Hides I have found yet. FREE

Just wanted to throw this out there. The cheapest hides I have found were FREE!!

I went to my local garden supply place which is about 1/2 mile from the house and asked about used plastic plant pots. They had literally a mountain of them in the back of the lot. The owner said to take all of them I wanted.
I flip them upside down, cut them to the height I want, cut an oval door in them, and slightly melt all the edges with a soldering iron to get rid of sharp edges. They can be gotten in various diameters for larger or smaller sub-adults and the height is adjustable by you.

Anyone else use these instead of the (expensive) factory made ones?

Have photos? Do they have holes for drainage in the bottom? Can your snake get stuck in the holes?

Great thinking about getting them. Just make sure is safe and clean really well. Pesticides' could effect the health of your snake and don't wash off easily.

They do have holes for drainage but if sized properly for the snake's size, I don't think it is possible for their head to fit into those small drain holes. In my case, I just sorted through the mountain of pots and picked the numerous sizes that would work for my various sized animals. My group only ranges from about 120 grams to 900 grams now so it wasn't very large pots. They had some much bigger. They were all scrubbed clean in chlorox and water mix 50/50 so VERY strong then cleaned again afterwards with a milder disinfectant.

I kind of like the holes. If you cant see their body through the door opening, The holes make it easy to spot which of the 2 hides they are in. That way, removing their hide they are using may not be necessary for cage spot cleaning. A tiny bit less bothering them and less stress. Mine all are handled at least once a week on Weigh in day (Saturdays) before feeding day (Sundays).

Definately yes. The place I went just recycles their old ones when they have a tandem dump truck load or 2. I was able to get 3 different sizes and I got 25 or so of each size for my 10 BP's that is 2 per snake of each size pot. with a few extras.

I have an old post somewhere about dollarstore hides. 4 or 5 for a dollar on hatchling hides so .20-.25 each is good for me!
