Exclamation Lost 30g! Is this okay?

Hello! So I just took Geno -my year old male ball python- out to weigh him and clean his tank. He's been fasting this whole month, and he lost 30 grams! When I weighed him on 3-9-18, he was 533 grams. Now he's 503 grams! I know it's normal for a bp to lose weight when their fasting, but is this much ok? Thanks! Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just wanna make sure he's not loosing too much

Yes. I big stinky one too ! I didn't think a poop would result in that drastic of a loss though..

He usually eats a jumbo mouse. Though last time I offered I tried a large mouse. That... was probably it. Sorry!

    don't be sorry!

when every meal could be your last, you need to eat an enormous meal; that means enormous poops!!!!

I agree. Most of the weight loss can be attributed to the poop.

Curious how big a jumbo mouse is? I've only been able to find ones a little over 30 grams so I'm interested in finding larger ones.

Re: Lost 30g! Is this okay?

Sounds like poop to me too.

If it makes you feel better, Shayna, after fasting all winter, was down to about 1430G dry (from about 1575G at her peak before fasting for 5 months). She had eaten three medium rats and was "up to" 1600G. One big poop later, down to 1470G!

If Geno is about 500G dry, I wouldn't even begin to worry until he's down 7-10% of his weight, or closer to 450G. At 500G, he can go a while without eating. Just make sure he has access to clean water and continues to drink.

Good to ask the question, but seriously, I wouldn't worry yet!

    Good luck!

The frozen ones advertised are never on the high end of the weight. They will say 35-50 grams and out of the 125ct i ordered none were more than 30-35 grams. I have gotten then 50 grams live from Pet Stores. Most likely Ex-Breeders.
