wheeze or whistle or something else

So today i took jake out and raped him around my neck when i took the dog for a walk . Its about 66 degres out so i put a sweater on coveringg him up. His head was resting out of the colar on my ear and twice i heard a wheezing sound or a whistle kind of sound. No bubbles coming out of his nostrils. He is still recovering from a bad shed. When i got him a month ago his shed was patchy and wouldnt come off, still has a couple small spotsTo get rid of

    My question is WHY??????

Serve not benefit to the snake, it stressing especially considering the species and you are subjecting your animal to temperatures below 75 which are considered unhealthy for BP.

Did you know that stress plus improper husbandry which includes temperatures are the number one cause of RI?

    Food for the thought.

Yeah, I agree with Deborah, absolutely no benefit to the snake taking him for a walk, especially in cool weather.

Also, all snakes, and reptiles, for that matter, are ectothermic, or cold blooded. They get heat from their environment and are NOT able to generate heat on their own.

Sweaters are designed to keep heat in. If the animal wearing it generates zero heat, it's of zero benefit.

So, if the temperature outside was 66F, the snake was 66F, sweater or not. That's too low, certainly for any extended period .

Regarding the breathing issue, it could be a stuck shed, piece of dirt, etc. It could also be an respiratory infection (RI).

The only way to know for sure is look for other symptoms, see if the noise continues, and if so, take the snake to a proper snake vet.

Poor husbandry is the number one causes of RI's and pretty much any reptile ailment. Last I checked, you were just getting temps under control, but the cool side as still a little chilly, and damp.

What is the cool side temp now? What is the hot side temp now? What is ambient temp? Are you still using that misting system?

If your snake was avoiding the hot side (which hopefully he did when temps were 115F) and staying on the cool side, unable to thermoregulate, I wouldn't be surprised if he got an RI. Especially if it is was very damp on the cool side. Damp and cold = recipe for an RI.

Reptiles get sick very slowly and tend not to show symptoms until it's bad. It also take a long time and proper care for them to get better.

I am hoping you have your husbandry under control now and your snake does not have an RI.

If the whistling stops and no other symptoms are shown, I would still leave him alone for a while in his setup (assuming husbandry is correct) to make sure. It could have been something stuck in his nose, as stated earlier, but he hasn't had proper husbandry yet. Let him relax and have the right temps, humidity, etc. before you do much handling.

How clean is your enclosure? I use paper substrate for cleanliness. If you are using something else, you need to keep it very clean. Spot clean well after waste, and clean out the entire tank monthly, at least, and disinfect with a proper and safe reptile disinfectant, like F10.

Finally, snakes have trouble shedding when the temps and especially humidity is off. Hopefully, as stated, it is just stuck shed, but you need to get that husbandry correct so he doesn't continue to get bad sheds, get sick, or get sicker.

Yeah, DEFINITELY no reason at all to bring your snake with you to walk the dog. If you want a pet you can take for walks, trade your snake in for a different pet.

66 degrees outside is WAY too cold to be bringing your BP outside at all, nevermind for a walk. That's a selfish act doing your snake a huge disservice. If you can't put your animal's needs ahead of your own need to "look cool" walking your snake, maybe time to reconsider keeping pets.

It wasnt to look cool thank you, my land lord came in to spray for spiders. Took the dog for a walk and took the snake with me and took both animals to my girls house so my land lord could do what he had to do.

Im not saying you people arent rite about about not taking him out side do to the temp out side, cause you are. but your little insight and comments crack me up. How about i trade my dog in for some more snakes

I've never walked a snake but I did have a huge iguana when I was a kid and I used to walk her all the time. My dad liked to bring her to my baseball and football games. We had a harness and leash. I remember it biting my dad at one game and didn't let go for a good hour.

Re: wheeze or whistle or something else

you explained your reasoning so i'll avoid that part of the thread.

TBH we get a lot of people that say they hear wheezing and popping when really it's just normal snake noises. since he was so close to your ear maybe you were just really keen on the noise.

an RI would be the biggest worry, next would be stuck shed around the nostrils. check to make sure the nose is clear of shed. check for bubbles or discoloration in the mouth.

even though i said i'd avoid it, i'd like to address why you got the reaction you did: we've seen this type of thing many times before, and we'll see it again and again. keepers taking their animals outside or in public spaces is not a new topic here, and we always side with what's best for the animals. yes, we have seen people that have said they want to take their animals outside simply to get noticed. that's no bueno.

we have our reasons for assuming the worst, because sometimes it's better to err on the side of caution then assume people know better. common sense ain't so common anymore.
