humidity issue
so i just read in the FAQ that a CHE can be a cause of low humidity which i agree with as its a constant battle im currently having, my question is, if i keep the room ambient @ 74-77 would ONE UTH be enough to get one side of a 30L up into the mid 80s? f not do i add another UTH? thanks in advance

Re: humidity issue
Have you tried putting tin foil over the lid? Or sphagnum moss?

a UTH does not raise ambient temperatures, so it would not raise the temperature of the tub. what type of substrate are you using? a change of substrate can help humidity.
at 74-77° F i'd assume the tub stays well above 75° F so i don't think you'd have a problem achieving proper ambient temps. my room runs ~73° F which keeps my tubs above 75° F.
has this helped?

Re: humidity issue
i have a bowl of moss and a water dish on the hot side, 75% of the screen top is taped, i usually have to dampen the open area of the reptichip a little to bump it up, a group im in will burn you at the stake for misting, but is it not as bad as they make it seem?

it is not. how are you measuring humidity, btw? could your measurement be off?

have another brand of hygrometer you can test it against.
honestly, with the sphagnum moss and the top covered, it sounds like you should be achieving good humidity levels (keywords: sounds like). how low are they getting?

With this annoying cold snap attacking most of North America, heaters are going to sap humidity like mad. Your best bet is to mist twice a day but make sure between misting that the sides of the tank are drying out.
Your absolute best location for humidity gauges are a few inches above the surface of the substrate. This allows you to gauge the ambient air humidity and not just the surface of the substrate which may be slightly damp and thus give you a false sense of humid environment.
On the subject of substrate, it is fine to lightly mist the substrate but it needs to dry out between misting. If you notice the walls of the tank or the substrate itself is still damp when you go to mist then hold off until the next time to mist.
Because of how dry heaters can make houses, it might get sub 20% humidity in your house which is going to make keeping a glass tank even harder to control. I would resign yourself to trying to shoot for 50% humidity. If the snake is going into shed you can then be more liberal with misting and even think on adding a humid hide.
One other long term solution in the winter is to get a humidifier for the room the snakes are in. It will help normalize the ambient humidity in the room thus making it less of an uphill battle against these dry winter months.
