I follow a personal rule, that the length of the enclosure will be greater or equal to the length of the snake. So when mine gets longer than her enclosure I'll know to move her up to a bigger tub.
I think it's usually recommended that minimum size be the length of the snake less than or equal to length and width. I just like to give some wander room lol.
