Is that true or an old wives tale ??

I'm sure I read something not too long ago that confirmed that there is absolutely no difference , nutritionally , between the two types - just easer for bigger snakes to feed one rat rather than two or three or more XL mice ....

    I may be wrong ....

After saying it i questioned myself about it. So i asked the almighty google. Rats have more protein and less fat, but thats the only real difference.

Only if you're currently eating mice.

    You trust Google 100% ?

Pretty sure I was looking at a scientific paper where they showed their was virtually difference between mice and rats nutritionally. Just rats are more convenient for larger meals /snakes .
They didn't involve underdeveloped pinkies or hoppers ..

I'll try and find it online somehow - as I always presumed rats were far better ...

Rats are around 56% protein and 32% fat and 12% "ash weight" mice are around 46% protein and 38% fat with 16 percent ash weight. As for minerals and vitamins virtually no difference. In any case it's not that big of a difference.

So you can know how much crude protein and magnesium you are eating in your next meal of tadpoles. Oh and it shows rats and mice too. Personally I love a good stew of gecko, prairie dog, and shrew but we can't always eat so well.

In all seriousness, there is absolutely zero nutritional difference between rats and mice except that rats can get bigger than mice. That's all.

Yeah, I repeated an old wives tale without thinking about it fully and trying to remember a usda study from years ago. That's a pretty neat list though

I'm sure I heard Bear Grills suggesting best form of protein in the wild and readily available was EARTHWORMS !!

They'd have to be fried in lard and served with a awful lot of gravy for me to try them though !
