My ball's belly is flaky and scales are coming off individually

    Hey guys,

So I have started to notice this as well in my ball python. When's I first noticed (a week and. A half ago) I thought it was just a sign of shedding soon to come. I went on vacation and came back and it's still there. The same as the pictures in the first post; very dry underbelly, crinkled edges and it feels like just before they shed but trust me she isn't shedding. She has not lost any scales but if I hold her I can feel them lift slightly (they don't come off very they could very easily if rubbed the wrong way).

I use a UTH and aspen shavings. Her hot spot is about 86 and the cool side is about 76. I don't use a heat light and humidity is about 40-60% (currently 50%). I just wetted the shavings (only a little) under her hides. I don't think it is scale rot because I don't wet the shavings on the regular. She just looks and feels very rough and scaly and I'm worried this might be serious. I have just lowered her UTH as well as a precaution.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks so much

My ball's belly is flaky and scales are coming off

    Hey guys,

So my ball python Roxy i suffering this same fate minus the scales actually falling off. I started noticing her belly scales getting rough and scaly and thought it was because a shed was coming but it never did. She has been this way for about 2 weeks now but I can't tell if it has gotten better or worse. Her scales are crinkled, dry and they are lifting up (exactly like before a shed) as well, if i were to rub her the wrong way they might just peel off.

I am using a UTH and the hot spot stays at about 86F while the cool side stays at around 76F. I have lowered the UTH even more now and have started wetting the shavings in the hides (only a little so I'm pretty sure it can't be scale rot). I don't use a heat lamp and humidity typically stays at 50%.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks so much.

Might want to start your own thread with close up pictures of the scales (not blurry) as well as pictures of your enclosure and exactly what kind of substrate you are using. You should also describe how you have at the thermostat setup for the UTH including where the probe is.

Definitely make a new thread as this one is 8 years old and it would not be fair to hijack it for help.

How long have you had her? Could she have been burned at some point, either in your possession or with another keeper before you?

I an effort to keep the forum clutter free both threads have been moved and merged, the best way to get an answer to a problem is to create your very OWN thread rather than bump an 8 years old one.

Also there is not need to post multiple incidental posts, all that is necessary is to create your own thread in the proper category and to be patient.

    Thanks

I will certainly create my own thread sorry about that. As for the two posts I couldn't find that first one anywhere so I thought maybe I didn't post it properly. I didn't even see it in my activity. Again I'm sorry for the inconvenience but thank you for the suggestions and I will certainly include that in the new thread.

Deborah fixed it for you so if you could post a clear close up picture of the scales, your enclosure, the type of substrate you are using, heat on hot side, cold side, and ambient temp, humidity, and if you have the heaters on thermostats.

Once you have all that people should be able to help find out if you have husbandry issues causing a problem, stuck shed, scale rot, or other issues.

When in doubt it is always best to find a decent vet skilled in exotic pets to help diagnose any issues.
