Looks like freezer-burn to me. If you have that happen often, you can individually package each rat (or 1-3 of that size) in a zip lock baggie and squeeze all the air out. Then but the small baggies into a gallon freezer bag, also with the air squeezed out, and store the whole package in a plastic freezer container. I do this for my rats and they keep without freezer burn for about 6 to 9 months.
