I'm not an expert either, but as long as they aren't always sticking out and only 'catch' your hands when you stroke the snake opposite how the scales run, I don't think this is a big issue. If you could get a photo that might help. Do they look discolored at all?

Also try not to pet the snake that direction anyway, as it can catch scales and probably feels pretty uncomfortable.
