Another update, 9:42 pm: My room is completely dark with the exception of my laptop (which the brightness I keep down anyway). Dewey has emerged yet again from his hide and is beginning to explore. I think he is doing well so far :3.

It's always so exciting watching them explore! Especially when they start picking their favorite spots!

It it was very fun seeing and hearing him move around. Turns out he is a bit of a climber! He was all over the top of his hides, logs, driftwood, and plants! He eventually settled in this morning in his middle hide, which is going to become his humid hide eventually (when he is ready to shed). It's one of those half logs, but it's standing up vertically and against the wall so the only way in is the top. He visited that hide and his plant of the hot side over and over, so I guess he likes it. There was one point where he made a noise (plant leaf hit the wall) and I look over and his little nose was up against the glass. Hehehe so cute. Should I maybe get him some more bars and things to climb on since he seems to enjoy being up higher so far?

    Aw cute!!!

As for adding more climbing stuff, I'd say hold off for now until you can get a better idea what his behavior and routine is like with what he has now. But definitely something to consider later and get ideas for! So that way you can observe him, take notes where he seems to enjoy exploring most and keep tabs on his favorite spots (which may change) then plan accordingly.

Basically let him and you get more familiar with the current set up before adding more fun stuff

But you can always start brainstorming now :p It's the most fun part after all hehe.

awesome! Thanks so much. Yeah I figured it'd just be something to consider, haha. I already have a notepad that I've used to take notes for when I was first figuring out where to put his enclosure, so, I'll just use that to log his behavior. Thanks again for the advice and replies

Re: First ever ball python! So obsessed!

Okay! Day 3 update: I woke up and found the substrate near his hot hide to be disturbed (looks like something came through there) and his hot side plant tipped over! Dang he is really loving climbing in that thing haha. Today, instead of using his cold hide as usual, he decided to chill out in his middle (humid) log hide. Oh, and I have a large thick piece of driftwood that I set up for him near a plant, and it looks like all the leaves on THAT plant were bent too lol (they're fake plants so you can bend the stems to get the look you want). And that's basically it. I would get more pictures but in his log hide he isn't visible whatsoever lol :3

Re: First ever ball python! So obsessed!

OKAY everyone it was been a long long while since I have updated, so I'm gonna roll right into it. If you're curious at all about my delay, I just started a threat explaining everything, if not, here we go!

Dewey is a FANTASTIC eater, I couldn't ask for better. He has fed 5, no, 6?, one of those, consecutive meals now! Without a single refusal too! I am so very happy in his interest in food, and honestly, it is so awesome being able to actually see your own snake feed in person. He hasn't had a problem thus far and I hope it stays that way!

He is also EXTREMELY tolerant of handling. He has never shown any heavy breathing, extreme stiffness, hissing, striking/strike position when I pick him out of his terrarium and handle him. He doesn't sit still either, but he doesn't try to frantically escape, or find somewhere to hide the whole time (when he does begin to do this towards the end of the handling session however, I put him back as to not stress him out and make him uncomfortable). He seems to be curious most of the time, and will look around and flick his little tongue as I hold him. He also does try to go into my hood/hoodie pockets sometimes, it's pretty cute. My family has begun to really take some interest in him as well, and seem genuinely fascinated! ESPECIALLY my dad. Every time I take him out, he always walks over and pets his back (gently of course). He also doesn't seem to mind re-wetting my moss and towels for me while I'm away or at my mom's, which is great, because I thought he was gonna have a huge problem with it.

And finally, a came home from school to find a surprise in my terrarium- a shed! I knew he was shedding because his eyes went milky, his colors went dull, and his belly turned pinkish, but it was still pretty awesome being that he shed in one big piece! Perfect! I have rolled out the shed and placed it on top of my desk, it's pretty cool to look at. My family has taken interest in THAT as well, and the day I found the shed they all wanted to see it after I was done rolling it out. I was so happy and relieved to see that his shed was successful, as his humidity was worrying me.

OH, and btw, he's still a bit of a climber! He's always bending the leaves of his fake plants and moving them around trying to slither in them. It's kind of funny! Sometimes I'll catch him at the veeery top of his half log (standing upright) or in his plants at night.

Phew! Glad that's over with! But there's everything that's happened with Dewey during the time I've been online, and honestly, it's been a really great experience so far.
