The only reason I would turn a heat lamp off overnight would be if it was a white incandescent bulb - so I never use those as heat lamps anymore.
Red or blue seem to be fine and not annoy them but the ceramic bulbs ( on a good thermostat ) beat both hands down.
Thermostats, thermometer probes, infrared thermometer guns... these all are more important than I ever imagined when I first started keeping snakes.
