    If the cage your daughter has is big enough, I highly advise getting a second rat to go with the first... they are very social (to the point that I had one literally get depressed and show huge changes in behavior when its' cage mate died) and a lone rat will not be happy.

    That said, the snake will get used to it. I keep rats in the same room as my snakes and don't have issues with handling. It is odd, but I think they know the difference between the smell of my rats and the f/t they eat, as they will all be out trolling if I've gotten feeders out to thaw.
