Daughter got an rat for her birthday

Hello all. So my wife decided to get my daughter a rat for her birth day. I feed reese live rats and now im worried he will smell the rats scent and always be on hunt mode. I feed him every sat and he has been normal . He has been doing his normal thing. So today my wife and daughter brung the rat home and as soon as they walked past reese cage "hallway" reese has been alert and out more. Mind you its 7 pm and he usually come out more towards 10pm. Any advice would be appreciated. Reese cage is in the hallway and my daughter and i room split the hallway on both sides. Should i move his cage so he will not smell the rats every time she open her room door.

Numerous people keep the snakes and raise feeder rats in the same room. The snakes get used to it, assuming they notice it at all. My rats were in the snake room until very recently. They were moved only due to space issues, and because they make too much noise at night for us to sleep in the adjoining room.

I don't feed live, but I do feed freshly killed.

Pet rats are fun. Hope your daughter enjoys her birthday present.

Yea i noticed that when they came home i seen reese shoot out his hid about half way with his tongue flicking a lot. He looked around for a while and retrieved backb to his hide but he is still out frok the neck up. Just dont want to confuse him and he stike be when i try to handle him thinking im feeding him

Lol i told my daughter if the rat get outs or she dont take care of it say bye bye lol. I even showed her reese lurking his cage when he smelled the rat lol

Yea it was lol. She is 12 so she understand, and it dont help that i let her watch me feed reese lol so she know he means business lol

If the cage your daughter has is big enough, I highly advise getting a second rat to go with the first... they are very social (to the point that I had one literally get depressed and show huge changes in behavior when its' cage mate died) and a lone rat will not be happy.

That said, the snake will get used to it. I keep rats in the same room as my snakes and don't have issues with handling. It is odd, but I think they know the difference between the smell of my rats and the f/t they eat, as they will all be out trolling if I've gotten feeders out to thaw.

Yes she has two rats because of that reason. I feed live, would that still apply as far as my snake getting used to the smell?
